Balance in Food and Sleep

Bhagavad Gita 6.16

Meaning · English

Yog is not for one who eats too much, nor for one who abstains from eating altogether. It is not for one who sleeps too much, nor for one who does not sleep enough, Arjun.

Three words carry this. Yoga comes from a root meaning to yoke or join: the mind harnessed and held steady, as in the verses just before. Ati means too much, past the measure. Ekantam means wholly, without exception, so the second clause is about someone who gives up eating entirely. Krishna names four people: one who eats too much, one who eats nothing, one who sleeps too much, one who sleeps too little. Of each he says the same thing, that yoga does not come to them. Both ends of the scale are shut. His reason is the body. A stuffed, heavy body drags the mind into dullness. A starved or sleepless one scatters it with hunger and fatigue. The mind is steadied through a body, and that body needs enough, not more and not less. So Krishna asks Arjuna for measure, not for heroic denial. Shankara, as a commentator, takes it to mean that steadiness of mind cannot be reached by excess or by harsh refusal of food and sleep. Ramanuja stresses that food and sleep shape the mind's clarity, so they have to be regulated for meditation to hold. Madhva reads it as a rule of preparation: the body is kept fit as an instrument for steady devotion.

A clay stove with a cooking fire. Pile on too much wood and the air cannot get in, so it smokes and sulks. Put in too little and it dies. A small, steady flame cooks the meal. Food and sleep are the wood, the steady mind is the flame, and Krishna is asking for the amount that keeps it burning.

1. At dinner tonight, eat slowly and stop a few bites before you feel heavy. Notice how your mind feels an hour later. 2. This week, pick a bedtime and a waking time and keep both within half an hour each day. 3. Once, notice how steady your attention is after a very large meal, and on another day after a long gap without food. Do not fast if a doctor has told you otherwise. 4. Write one line each evening: too much, too little, or enough.

A truck driver, long past midnight, has skipped dinner to make up time. At a roadside stall he is tempted to eat three plates of rice, and his eyes are already closing. Krishna's measure changes the moment in steps. First, a modest meal rather than none or a heap. Second, stopping before the heaviness comes. Third, a short rest when the eyes begin to close, instead of pushing on. Doctors would say much the same. Long gaps without food leave a person weak, irritable and unable to concentrate. A very large meal brings drowsiness. Too little sleep dulls attention and slows reaction, and sleep needs differ from person toPerson, so no single number fits everyone. Ordinary experience also confirms that a tired, hungry person has less restraint. The claim that this balance is what makes yoga possible is the Gita's own teaching, and medicine has nothing to add to it. The verse does not remove the exhaustion of the road. It is no substitute for a doctor where there is an eating disorder, persistent insomnia or an illness that sets its own rules for food.
