A Measured Day Ends Sorrow

Bhagavad Gita 6.17

Meaning · English

For one who is moderate in eating and recreation, balanced in effort at work, and regulated in sleep and waking, Yog becomes the slayer of sorrows.

Krishna's key word here is yukta. It comes from the root yuj, to join or fit, and it means fitted, measured, regulated. Yog comes from the same root. So the measured life and Yog are not two things: a day with the right fit already has a little yoking in it. The other word is duhkha-ha. Duhkha is sorrow or pain, and ha is one who strikes down. Krishna names four parts of a day: what one eats, how one rests and plays, how one works, and when one sleeps and wakes. He asks for measure in each. The reason follows from the verse before it, which closes off the extremes of stuffing and starving, oversleeping and sleeplessness. Having shut those doors, Krishna says what lies behind the open one: Yog that actually removes pain. A mind that is hungry, exhausted or restless cannot sit steady, so the body's daily habits become the ground the practice stands on. Shankara reads this as the regulation that makes meditation possible and so ends the pain of worldly life. Ramanuja takes it as the steadiness needed for the practice of seeing the self. Madhva reads it as the discipline that supports meditation on the Lord. All three keep every clause: food, play, work, sleep and waking.

A handcart with four wheels rolls easily only when all four are true. If one wobbles, the whole cart drags and the puller tires. Eating, rest, work and sleep are the four wheels, and a day with all four steady is a day Yog can travel on.

1. Tonight, write four short lines: when you ate today, when you rested, how long you worked, and when you slept. 2. Choose the one line that looks most ragged and give it one fixed, realistic time for tomorrow. 3. Keep that single change for seven days, without adjusting the other three. 4. Each evening, note in one sentence how your mind felt compared with the day before.

A long-distance truck driver pulls into a roadside stop at dusk. He is hungry, behind schedule, and tempted to eat a heavy plate, drink strong tea and push on four more hours. The verse would change that moment in small steps. He would eat a plain meal at a sensible size, walk for a few minutes, and set a time to stop for the night. He would not drive on past the point where his eyes close on their own. Ordinary experience confirms the effect: a body fed, moved and rested at regular times is steadier in mood and attention, and a tired, hungry person snaps and errs more easily. Krishna's claim goes further. He says this measure is what turns Yog into the slayer of sorrow, and that is his teaching, not a medical promise. It does not remove grief, illness or debt, and it does not replace a doctor for a sleep disorder, an eating problem or any condition that needs care.
