The Mind Comes Home

Bhagavad Gita 6.18

Meaning · English

When the mind, fully disciplined, rests in the self alone, and the person is free from craving for every desire of the senses, then that person is said to be steady in yoga.

Three words carry it. Chitta is the mind, the busy part that gathers impressions and sends out wants. Kama is yearning, the pull toward what the senses promise. Yukta means joined, or steady in yoga. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person is called yukta at one point: when the mind, fully held in check, stays in the self and no longer reaches for every sense-desire. Two things have to be true together. The mind is restrained, and it has somewhere to rest, the self. Restraint alone would only be a clenched fist. Krishna gives the reason in the verses around it: yoga is meant to end sorrow, and a mind pulled in a hundred directions by craving cannot be still. So he marks out what the finished state looks like, so Arjuna can tell real steadiness from effort or show. He asks Arjuna to let the mind settle inward and to loosen the grip of wanting. Shankara reads the self as the one Self, beyond body and mind. Ramanuja reads it as the individual soul, steadily contemplated. Madhva reads the mind as resting in the Lord within.

A restless cat circles the room, jumps on the sill, paws at the door, then finally turns twice and curls up on one cushion. It is not forced there. Nothing else is calling it. The mind likewise stops roaming after every wish and settles in the self.

1. Today, when a small want arrives (a snack, your phone, a message to check), do not act at once. Wait for ten slow breaths. 2. Name the want silently, for example: "wanting sweet." Notice where you feel it in your body. 3. Watch whether it rises, peaks and fades while you wait. Then choose freely, to have it or not. 4. Tonight, recall one moment today when your mind felt settled, and how it differed from the pulling.

A man stands at the sweet shop counter. His doctor told him last month to cut sugar, yet his eyes are already on the jalebis and his hand is half raised. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. First, the man sees that the wanting is a movement of the mind, not an order he must obey. Second, he lets it be there without feeding it or fighting it, and returns his attention to his breath or the weight of his feet. Third, the pull usually rises, crests and loosens, and what is left is a mind he can lead. Ordinary experience confirms that a craving left unfed for a few minutes often loses its force. The Gita goes further and says the lasting rest is in the self, which is its own teaching. The verse does not promise that wanting never returns, and it does not replace medical care. A man whose sugar is dangerously high still needs his doctor, his diet and his medicine.
