The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 6 · Sitting in Stillness
A Lamp Without Wind
Bhagavad Gita 6.19
Meaning · English
As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker, so is the yogi of disciplined mind, steadily practicing meditation on the Supreme. This is the comparison that is considered fitting.
Krishna gives Arjuna a picture for what a trained mind looks like in meditation. Three words carry it. Nivata means windless, a spot where no draught reaches the flame. Yata-chitta means a mind that has been reined in, gathered and held, not forced into silence. Yuñjata means steadily practicing, a joining done again and again. The plain sense: a flame in still air stands upright and does not waver, and a disciplined mind that keeps returning to the Supreme stands just as steady. The reason is that Arjuna has heard about the goal of yoga and wants to know what it looks like from outside. A flame in a sheltered room is something anyone has seen. The picture also asks something of the listener: the steadiness comes from where the lamp stands, which is why the meditator must first remove the winds. The flame is lit and bright, not dull. Shankara reads the Supreme as the Self, one with Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as meditation on the soul resting in the Lord. Madhva reads it as the Lord Vishnu, who is distinct from the meditator.
A snow globe that has just been shaken is a blizzard of white flakes. Set it on a shelf and leave it, and the flakes sink until the little scene shows clearly. The flakes are the restless thoughts, the shelf is a calm, regulated life, and the clear scene is the mind resting on what it meditates on.
1. Tonight, pick one ordinary flame: a candle, a diya, or a gas burner turned low. Sit a metre away for two minutes. 2. Notice what moves it: a breath, a footstep, an open door. Watch how it settles when the air is still. 3. Then close your eyes for two minutes and notice what moves your own attention: a worry, a sound, a plan. 4. Tomorrow, take away one such draught for ten minutes, such as the phone in another room.
A man sits in a hospital corridor while his mother is in for a scan. His phone buzzes with messages, his thoughts run ahead to bad results, and he rereads the same notice on the wall four times. The verse speaks to him as a picture of what he lacks and what helps. He cannot calm the whole building, but he can see that the flame is shaken by draughts and that some of them are in his hands. He puts the phone face down and sits with his feet flat. He lets his gaze rest on one point and counts his breaths for a few minutes. His attention keeps slipping, and each return is the practice the verse calls steady. Ordinary experience agrees that attention frays when we are tired, hungry or anxious. The verse does not promise that the result will be good, that fear will vanish, or that sitting quietly replaces the doctor and the news. It says only that a mind held steady can be seen as a still flame.
