Joy in the Stilled Mind

Bhagavad Gita 6.20

Meaning · English

When the mind, held in check by the practice of yog, comes to rest in inner joy, and when, through the purified mind, one beholds the soul and is satisfied in the self alone.

Krishna uses a few words that carry the whole verse. Chitta is the mind, the part that thinks, remembers and wanders. Niruddha means restrained, held back from running after things, the way a gate holds a field. Yoga-seva is service of yog: steady, repeated practice, not a single effort. Atma is the self, the soul. Krishna tells Arjuna that practice slowly brings the wandering mind to a standstill, and that this stillness is not empty. Joy comes up from within it. In that state the mind has been purified, and it becomes the instrument through which the soul sees itself. The seer is satisfied in the self, wanting nothing added. Krishna gives this as the answer to restlessness: a mind that is always reaching outward never finds its own centre, and a mind brought home does. He asks Arjuna for patient practice, with the mind as the thing trained. Shankara reads the self that is seen as the one undivided Self, revealed when the mind is stilled. Ramanuja reads it as the individual soul, known as separate from body and mind. Madhva reads the satisfaction as contentment in the Supreme, seen within.

A glass of muddy water, stirred, hides everything in it. Set it on a table and leave it alone, and the silt sinks until the bottom shows plainly. Nothing was added to make it clear. The mind is the water, practice is the leaving alone, and the soul is the bottom that was always there.

1. Pick one fixed time today, such as just after waking or before supper, and sit somewhere quiet for five minutes. 2. Rest your attention on your breath. When a thought pulls you away, notice it and return, without scolding yourself. 3. Count how many times you drifted, only to see how busy the mind is. 4. When the five minutes end, stay still for ten more seconds and notice whether anything feels settled. 5. Repeat at the same time tomorrow.

A mother lies awake at three in the morning, replaying a sharp argument with her grown son. Each reply she did not make runs again, and each run leaves her more wound up. Krishna's teaching begins with the mind held in check by practice, not by force in the moment. On such a night, that would mean noticing the replay as a replay, and bringing attention to the breath or to the weight of her body on the bed. The thoughts do not vanish, but they stop being fed. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind wanders more and a calmer one wanders less, which is why the verse speaks of practice over time. In the stillness that follows, the text promises a contentment that does not depend on the argument being settled. It does not promise that the quarrel is mended, that the worry is gone, or that sleep will come. Where sleeplessness or low mood lasts for weeks, a doctor is the right person to ask.
