I am not the body, and the body is not mine. I am awareness: one who is sure of this stands as if already free, and does not call to mind what was done and left undone. From Brahma down to a blade of grass, I am that alone: one who is sure of this is free of doubt, clean, and still, and rests untroubled by what is gained and what is not.
Three words carry the verse. Bodha means awareness, knowing, from budh, to wake. Kaivalya means aloneness, the state of the self standing by itself, from kevala, only. Nirvikalpa means without vikalpa, the mind's habit of splitting things into this and that, and then picking one. The verse has two halves. In the first, Ashtavakra says the one who is sure the body is neither the self nor its own possession is awareness itself, and lives as if already alone and free. Such a person does not keep a ledger of deeds done and undone. The pull of what I should have finished loosens, because there is no longer a doer holding the account. In the second half the sureness widens. From Brahma, the first of beings, down to a blade of grass, the same self is all that is there. So nothing stands outside as a rival or a prize. The mind stops splitting, the person is clean of grasping, still, and no longer shaken by getting or missing. This is taught here because Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that it is a settled certainty, not a task. It asks the listener to test the old identification with the body and its record of deeds, and to see whether anything is left to be anxious about.
A wave rising on the sea may call itself tall or small, rushed or late, and keep count of its own crests. Then it falls back and finds there was only water throughout, the same in every wave and in the flat stretch between. The counting belonged to the shape, never to the sea.
1. Tonight, before sleep, take two minutes to go through the day's unfinished tasks and regrets. Name each one quietly, as a list of things that happened. 2. After each, ask: who is aware of this? Stay with that question for a few breaths without answering it. 3. Tomorrow, when you catch yourself tallying a win or a miss, say silently, aware of this, and go on with the next small thing.
A man sits in his car outside the hospital after his shift as a ward attendant, replaying one thing: a patient's call he answered a minute late. The list of things done and not done grows as he sits. The verse, as the text teaches it, loosens the grip of that list. If he is sure that he is the awareness in which the day appeared, and not the body that moved through it, the tally has no owner to punish. He can notice the replay, see that it is watched, and let it end without a verdict. Then the same self is in the patient and in the corridor, and nothing remains to defend. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: dwelling on a mistake in the dark hours rarely changes the mistake, and a settled mind sleeps better than a scoring one. The verse does not promise that he will feel nothing, that the late answer did not matter, or that he should skip reporting a real lapse to his seniors. It does not replace rest, or a doctor if the replaying turns to constant dread.
