No Wonder, Only Rest

Ashtavakra Gita 11.8

Meaning · English

The world is no wonder, he is certain; it is nothing at all. Free of craving, he is only the shining of awareness, and he grows still, as though he were nothing.

Ashtavakra describes the free sage in three marks. The first is niścayī, one who is certain. This is settled seeing, not a belief held with effort. The second is nirvāsana, without vāsanā. A vāsanā is a stored leaning, a groove left by past wanting that keeps pulling the mind toward things. The third is sphūrtimātra, only sphūrti. Sphūrti is the flash or shining of awareness, and mātra means only. The sage is that and nothing added. Now the clauses. The world is no wonder, because Ashtavakra teaches that it has no being apart from the self that sees it. So there is nothing in it to gape at. It is nothing in that sense only. He does not say it is a lie or that it does not appear. With wonder gone, craving has nothing to feed on, and what is left is plain awareness. Śāmyati means he grows quiet, like a fire with no fuel. He rests as though he were nothing, because no claimant is left to defend or add to. This answers Janaka's opening question about how freedom comes. Ashtavakra says it comes by seeing, not by effort. It asks the listener to notice how much of ordinary wanting rests on the world looking astonishing.

A street magician makes a coin vanish and the crowd gasps. The one who has learned the trick stands among them calm, because he knows where the coin is. The world is the trick, the gasp is craving, and the calm one is the sage who knows what it rests on.

1. Today, when something dazzles or alarms you, such as a price, a headline or a neighbour's new car, stop for three slow breaths. 2. Ask once: what is aware of this? Stay with that awareness for a moment, not with the thing. 3. Notice whether the wanting or worry has loosened even slightly. Do not force it either way. 4. Tonight, write one line on what drew your wonder today and how long the pull lasted.

A woman waits on a railway platform at dawn, scrolling her phone. A classmate has posted photographs of a large new house. Within seconds she feels a small ache, then a list of what she lacks, and the platform around her disappears. The teaching says this chain begins with wonder. The house is taken as something marvellous and separate, and craving follows. Ashtavakra says the sage is certain the world is no wonder, so the chain does not start. She would see the photographs appear, the ache stir, and the awareness in which both show up. She need not push the ache away. She only declines to be amazed by it, and the wanting has less to grip. Ordinary experience confirms part of this. What we have seen a hundred times stops astonishing us, and the wanting for it fades with the astonishment. The limit is plain. The teaching does not promise that she will feel nothing, that envy will never return, or that hardship such as rent or illness will stop needing real attention. It speaks of the settled seeing of a sage, not a quick remedy for one morning.
