First the body's busy tasks fall away from me, then the spreading of speech. No fondness is left for sound and the other objects, and the self is never seen as an object. My heart, once torn between scattering and strained fixing, stays just so.
Janaka describes his own state in order, layer by layer. Three words carry it. Kritya means the tasks of the body, the doing. Vistara means spreading out, here the sprawl of talk. Priti means fondness, the pull toward sound, touch, sight and the rest. First the doing drops away. Then the talking. Then the fondness for what the senses bring. Nothing is forced out. Each layer simply stops being something he leans on. The next clause is the centre. The self is adrishya, not to be seen as an object. Sound and form can be seen or heard. The one who knows them cannot be placed in front of itself like a cup on a table. It is always the seer. Then comes vikshepa, scattering, and ekagra, one-pointed fixing. These are the two efforts of an unsettled mind: running about, then clamping down. Janaka says his heart is no longer caught between them. It stays as it is. Janaka says this to answer Ashtavakra's teaching that the self is the witness and already free. If so, no further effort is needed to reach it. The verse asks the listener to see where doing, talking and craving actually stop.
A kettle boils, hissing and rattling on the stove. Someone turns off the flame, and the lid stops jumping, then the steam thins, then the sound goes. Nothing pushed the water to be calm. The cause of the noise was removed. The flame is the leaning on doing, talking and craving, and the still water is the knower.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with your hands empty, away from your phone. 2. Say nothing aloud. Notice the moment you want to fill the quiet with a word or a task. 3. Notice one sound, the fan or a street noise, and see whether you are fond of it, bothered by it, or neither. 4. Ask once: who is aware of all this? Do not look for an answer. Just notice that the asking is done by something that is never in the picture.
A woman has hosted her nephew's wedding since dawn. By evening her feet ache, her voice is hoarse, and relatives are still calling her name across the hall. She slips into the courtyard and sits on the step. The verse would change that moment in small stages. First she lets her hands stop reaching for the next job. Then she lets her mouth stop answering. The music from the hall is still there, but she does not lean toward it or away. Then she notices the one who hears it, which is not any of the sounds. The text calls that one the knower. It says the knower is already free and needs only to be recognised. Ordinary experience confirms only a modest part of this: a person who stops talking and moving for a few minutes often feels the day's pressure ease. The verse does not promise that her tiredness, her sore feet or the family's demands will vanish. It does not replace rest, food or a doctor if she is unwell.
