Practices of absorption, and the laying of one thing over another that goes with them, are themselves a distraction. Conduct is arranged for the sake of absorption. Seeing this rule, I remain just as I am. With no throwing away and no taking up, there is no gladness and no grief. Today, O brahmin, I remain just as I am.
Three words carry it. Vikshepa is distraction, from a root meaning to throw apart: the mind scattered. Samadhi is absorption, a putting together, the mind gathered into one. Heya and upadeya are the thing to be thrown away and the thing to be taken up. Janaka first looks at the whole machinery of getting still. Practices for absorption, and the habit of laying one idea over the self, all keep the mind busy. Conduct is arranged so that absorption may come later. Janaka sees that this is a rule of effort, and effort scatters. So he stops playing by it and stays as he is. Then he says what is left. Nothing is being thrown away and nothing is being taken up. Without that pair, gladness and grief have nothing to hold on to, since each one needs something gained or lost. He says this as his own state today, to Ashtavakra, who asked how freedom is won. The Ashtavakra Gita answers that freedom is not won by a method. It asks only that the listener see how the chase for stillness is itself the stir.
A man hunts through the house for his spectacles, turning out drawers and growing more anxious, while they sit on his forehead the whole time. The hunt is the distraction. Practices and rules are the drawers, and the stillness he searches for is the one already looking out through his eyes.
1. Choose one ordinary wait today, a kettle, a queue or a red light, of about five minutes. 2. Leave the phone alone and do not try to calm yourself. 3. Notice each small pull to fix, improve or get rid of something, and let it pass unanswered. 4. At the end, notice whether anything was actually missing.
A woman sits at a bus stop after a job interview, phone in hand, waiting for a call. She rehearses her answers, hopes, and braces for no. Each minute swings between a small gladness and a small dread, because she is holding the result, the thing to be taken up or thrown away, long before it exists. The verse, as the text teaches it, begins by seeing that the swinging needs two things, a gain to chase and a loss to refuse. She notices the grab and the push. Then she sees that the grabbing is the restlessness, not the news itself. With that seen, the call can come or not, and she is not already halfway into joy or sorrow when it does. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a body braced against a loss feels tighter than one simply waiting. The verse does not promise the job, or that disappointment will not sting. It does not replace practical steps, or a doctor when worry has grown past what waiting can hold.
