The stages of life and the life beyond stages, meditation, the mind's taking up and putting away: I have seen all of these as imagining, and so I stand as I am. Carrying out action comes from not knowing, and so does ceasing from it. Having understood this truth completely, I stand just as I am.
King Janaka is describing his own state to Ashtavakra. Four words carry it. Ashrama is a stage of life, a place where one strives, such as student, householder or forest-dweller. Vikalpa is imagining, a mental construction, from kalp, to fashion. Ajnana is not-knowing, the lack of jnana, knowledge. Uparama is ceasing or withdrawal, from ram, to rest. Janaka goes through the list. Life-stages, the state beyond them, meditation, and the mind's habit of accepting one thing and rejecting another are all vikalpa. They are shapes the mind makes and then treats as solid. Seeing this, he stands as he is. Then he turns to action. Taking up duties and rites comes from ajnana, from taking oneself to be a doer who must achieve something. Stopping them comes from the same place. Withdrawal is still a doing, done by someone who thinks he must arrive somewhere. Both belong to the one mistake. The reason he gives is that he has understood this truth fully. The text teaches that the self is the witness, already free, so no practice can produce it and no abstaining can protect it. The verse asks the listener to see that even giving up is another form of effort.
A hand is clenched around a coin. Someone then forces it stiffly open by effort, and that is work too. A hand lying loose in the lap is doing neither. Clenching stands for taking up, forcing open for ceasing, and the loose hand for the self that needs neither.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with no purpose. Do not try to meditate or to stay calm. 2. Notice each time you start arranging yourself: straightening your back, quieting your thoughts, trying to stop trying. 3. Name it plainly, "that is one more doing," and let it go without fixing it. 4. When the five minutes end, notice whether the one watching was ever busy.
A man retires after thirty years and sets himself a strict schedule for the first week: prayer at dawn, a long walk, an hour of silence, no news. By Thursday he feels he is failing at being retired. He is tense about relaxing, and he scolds himself for the mind that will not go quiet. The verse would change this in small steps. He would see the schedule as a set of shapes the mind made, useful or not, but not himself. He would see the scolding as one more effort, the same effort turned against its own stopping. Then he could keep the walk because he likes it, and let the silence be whatever it is, with no score kept. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: trying hard to fall asleep or to relax usually keeps a person awake and tight. The verse does not promise that restlessness, boredom or grief will vanish. It does not replace a doctor for low mood or sleeplessness that lingers.
