Even when he tries to think the unthinkable, a man only makes it into a thought. So I have let go of that effort of thinking, and I stand just here, just so. Whoever has done this, simply this, has done all that was to be done. Whoever rests in this very nature, just as it is, has done all that was to be done.
Janaka is describing his own state to Ashtavakra. Three words carry the verse. Achintya means the unthinkable: a, not, and chintya, what can be thought, from the root chit, to perceive or think. Chinta is the thought itself, a mental shape. Svabhava is one's own nature, from sva, own, and bhava, being. Kritartha means one whose task is done, from krita, done, and artha, purpose. The first clause says that when a man tries to think the unthinkable, what he gets is a thought. The thing he reaches for is the knower, and the knower is never an object in the mind. Whatever he holds up is already a picture, and the picture is not it. So Janaka drops the effort of picturing, and says he stands just so, as he is. The next two clauses say that whoever has done this has finished the work of life. The last says the same of whoever rests in his own nature. It is taught here because Janaka has been asking how freedom is won. His answer is that no effort of thought wins it, since thinking only makes more thoughts. The text asks the listener to stop reaching for the self as an object and to recognise that the one who sees is already there.
A man looks for his own eyes by looking harder, and sees only a mirror's picture, or nothing. The harder he strains, the less he finds. Eyes are what he looks with, never what he looks at. The self is like that: it is the seeing, so no thought of it can catch it.
1. Choose one quiet ten minutes today, sitting anywhere. 2. Try to picture the one who is aware, the one watching your thoughts. Do it honestly for two minutes. 3. Notice that whatever you picture is something seen, not the seer. 4. Stop trying. For the rest of the time, simply sit without a task, and notice what is still present when the effort ends.
A mother sits at the hospital bed of her sleeping child at three in the morning, running every possible outcome through her mind. Each new thought about what might happen leads to another, and none settles anything. The verse, as Janaka speaks it, would change one thing in that moment. She would see that the effort to think her way to certainty only produces more thoughts. She would put the effort down. The thinking may still come, but she is no longer feeding it as if it were the answer. What remains is the plain fact of sitting beside her child, breathing, aware. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind pressed to solve what cannot be solved by thought tends to loop and tire, and that it loosens a little when the pressing stops. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the child well, remove her fear, or replace the doctors and nurses who are caring for him. It speaks of where the knower rests, not of what happens in the ward.
