Meaning · English

Where is the knower, where the means of knowing, where the thing known, where the knowledge itself? Where is something, where is nothing? For me, always spotless, there is none of it.

Three words carry the verse. Pramatri is the knower, the one who knows. Pramana is the means of knowing: eyes, ears, reasoning, a teacher's word. Prameya is the thing known. Prama is the knowledge that results. Ordinary knowing needs all four, and Janaka asks where each one is. Then he asks where 'something' is and where 'nothing' is. He is not swapping a full world for an empty one. Both ideas belong to the same habit of measuring. The word vimala means spotless, without stain: the self has nothing mixed into it that could split it into knower and known. That is why he says 'always'. The clear self was never otherwise. Ashtavakra had taught that the self is the witness, already free. Here Janaka, having heard it, reports that even the machinery of knowing has gone quiet in him. The verse asks the listener to see that the knower, the tools and the object are one pattern of thought, and that the witness stands clear of that pattern. The text teaches this as recognition, not as a new skill to build.

A man looks into a clean glass of water held to the light. There is a glass, water and a looker, and so there are three things. Then the glass is set down and the light fills the room evenly. Knower, instrument and object are like those separate things, a division that holds only while one stands inside the measuring.

1. Today, when you notice you are sure of something, such as a person's mood or the time of a bus, stop for ten seconds. 2. Ask quietly: who is the knower here, what did I use to know it, and what is the thing known? 3. Then notice what was present before you asked. Do not name it, just stay with it. 4. Return to your day. Do this three times before bedtime.

A bus driver finishes a long route, parks, and finds he cannot say whether the last hour was tiring or fine. He drove it well and remembers almost none of it. Ordinary experience already shows that knowing is not one solid thing. Sometimes the knower, the effort and the object blur into a single flow, as in absorbed work. The verse starts from that kind of moment and says what Janaka sees in it: the divisions of knower, means and known belong to one measuring, and the witness stands clear of them. In the driver's evening, that would change his question. He need not grade the hour as good or bad. He can notice that the awareness that met the road, the wheel and the tiredness was the same awareness, untouched by any of them. The verse does not promise he will stop being tired, and it does not replace rest, a meal or a doctor if the tiredness persists. It describes what Janaka sees in himself, and it offers that vision as the text's teaching, not as a technique.
