Where is distraction, where is focus? Where is understanding, where is dullness? Where is gladness, where is grief, for me who am always without action? Where is this worldly business, where is that highest truth? Where is happiness, where is pain, for me who am always free of turning things over in thought?

Four words carry the verse. Vikshepa is scattering, from a root meaning to throw: the mind flung in many directions. Ekagrya is one-pointedness, literally one tip, the mind gathered on a single thing. Nishkriya is without action, kriya being doing. Nirvimarsha is without reflection, vimarsha being the mind's habit of turning a matter over and over. Janaka lists the pairs a seeker works with: a scattered mind and a gathered one, understanding and dullness, joy and sorrow, ordinary dealings and the highest truth, pleasure and pain. Then he asks, of each, where it is. He does not say they never appear. He says they find no place in the one he now knows himself to be, who does nothing and weighs nothing. This is the answer to the boy-sage's teaching. Ashtavakra has said that the self is the witness and is already free. If so, even focus is only one more state, coming and going in what watches. Janaka is not praising a mind that has mastered itself. He is saying there was never a self that needed mastering. The text asks the hearer to stop counting the mind's weather as who they are.

A mirror hangs in a hallway. A child runs past crying, a guest passes laughing, dust settles, the light turns grey and gold. The mirror holds every one of them and keeps none. The mirror is the witness. The crying, the laughing and the dust are the states of mind, gathered or scattered, glad or grieved.

1. Once today, for two minutes, sit and watch your thoughts the way you would watch passers-by from a window. 2. When a mood arrives, such as worry, restlessness or pleasure, say its name silently: scattered, glad, heavy. 3. Then ask, "Who is noticing this?" and stay with that question for a few breaths. 4. Notice that the noticing was already there before the mood and is still there after it goes.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at night, waiting for the result of his mother's scan. His mind runs in every direction: what the doctor will say, what he should have asked, whether to call his brother. He checks his phone, sits, stands, sits again. The verse would not stop any of this at first. It would change what he takes the running to be. Step by step: he sees that the dread is a thought, and that someone is watching it. He sees that the pacing is a state, and that the watcher is not pacing. The verse says Janaka finds in himself no scattering and no gathering, because he is the one in whom both appear. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a feeling that has been named and watched often loosens a little. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the result any better, does not remove his grief if the news is bad, and does not replace the doctor, the questions he must ask, or the hand of his brother.
