The Wise Walk Around

Katha Upanishad 1.2.2

Meaning · English

The lasting good and the pleasing thing both come to a person. The steady one goes all around them, studies each, and tells them apart. The steady one picks the lasting good over the pleasing. The dull one picks the pleasing, for the sake of getting and keeping.

Three words carry the verse. Shreyas is what is better for you in the end. Preyas is what is dearer to you now. Dhira, the wise one, is steady: dhi is understanding, and the dhira is the person whose understanding does not wobble. The opposite is manda, someone slow or dull, whose mind is not yet awake to the difference. Yama tells Nachiketas that both choices arrive at every person's door. Neither is hidden. The steady person does not grab. He walks around each option, as you would walk around a house before buying it, and sees which one is which. Only then does he choose, and he chooses the lasting good. The dull person chooses the pleasing for yogakshema: getting what he lacks and guarding what he already has. His reason is not wickedness. It is the ordinary wish to gather and protect. Yama's point is that this wish, followed without looking around, decides for him. Shankara reads the walking around as a real act of weighing, and the dull person's choice as driven by wanting to acquire and keep. On his reading the fault is not in the pleasing thing but in choosing it unexamined.

Picture someone at a market stall holding two mangoes. One is bright and smells sweet. The other is plain. A careless buyer takes the bright one and leaves. A careful buyer turns both over, presses them, and checks the underside. The turning over is the walking around, and the plain fruit may be the ripe one.

1. Today, pick one small choice where something easy is pulling at you: a snack, a message, a purchase, a show. 2. Before choosing, wait one full minute. Look at both options and ask what each will feel like tomorrow morning. 3. Say the answer to yourself in a plain sentence, then choose either one. 4. In the evening, notice whether the choice matched the sentence. Do this once a day for a week.

A man stands in a showroom on a Saturday. The salesman is offering a bike on easy monthly payments, and it gleams. At home, his father's hospital bills are still unpaid. His hand is already on the handlebar. The verse asks for one thing here: walk around it. He steps outside and asks what the bike gives him this week and what it takes from him in a year. He sets it beside the bills. He asks what he is actually trying to get or protect by buying it. Then he decides, and the decision is his own, made with both options in view. Ordinary experience confirms that a short pause often loosens the pull of something bright. The verse does not say the pleasing thing is always wrong. It says the choice should come from looking, not from the pull. It also does not promise that the wiser choice will feel good, remove the worry about the bills, or settle what the family owes. A financial adviser or a doctor is still the right person for those questions.
