Nothing Greater to Gain

Bhagavad Gita 6.22

Meaning · English

Having gained it, one thinks no other gain is greater than that. Standing in it, one is not shaken even by the heaviest sorrow.

Krishna is describing the state reached by steady practice of yoga, and he gives two marks of it. Take two words first. Labha means a gain, something obtained. Guru means heavy, weighty; here it is the heaviest kind of sorrow, duhkha, which is pain and distress of any sort. The first mark is that the person who has reached this state looks around and finds no other gain that would be greater. Nothing is left on the shopping list. The second mark is that this person is sthita, standing or settled, and even the heaviest grief does not shake them loose. Krishna's reason is plain. Every ordinary gain is partial. It satisfies for a while, then the wanting starts again, and every ordinary footing can be knocked away by loss. A contentment that depends on nothing outside cannot be taken away by loss. He is answering the worry of anyone who thinks peace must be bought with comfort. Of the listener he asks to see where the footing lies. Shankara reads the gain as knowledge of the Self, beyond which nothing remains to be got. Ramanuja reads it as the soul's vision of itself in its own nature, as part of the Lord. Madhva reads it as the grace and vision of Vishnu, which no other gain exceeds.

A tall old banyan tree in a monsoon storm. Thin saplings around it bend flat and snap, while the banyan, with roots gone deep and wide, only sways its leaves. The sorrow is the wind. The deep root is the settled state Krishna describes, which holds because it does not rest on anything the wind can reach.

1. Tonight, take a pen and write down three things you are waiting to get, such as a raise, a repair, or an apology. Next to each, write what you expect to feel once you have it. 2. Tomorrow, when one of them arrives or fails, notice how long the feeling lasts. Even a rough answer in hours is enough. 3. This week, when a small trouble hits, stop for one minute. Ask what in you is still standing, and breathe slowly while you look. 4. Write what you find in one line. Do this for a week.

A shopkeeper opens his shutter on the morning the rent is due, with half the money in the drawer. He checks the till twice, and his chest is tight. Krishna's teaching would change this in steps. He would first see that the fear is asking for one more gain, the missing money, to restore his peace. Then he would notice what is steady beneath the fear: breath, hands, ability to speak plainly to his landlord. From there he could act, ask for a few days, and not be flattened by the answer. The text offers a footing that stays under him whatever the landlord says. It does not promise the rent will be paid, and it does not remove real grief or loss. A person in deep distress, with sleeplessness or thoughts of self-harm, needs a doctor or a counsellor as well. Ordinary experience does confirm one part: the wish for just one more thing often goes quiet within days of getting it, and a person who has some inner steadiness bears hard news better than one whose calm depends on good news.
