Slow Steady Stillness

Bhagavad Gita 6.25

Meaning · English

Gradually, little by little, let him come to rest, using an intellect held firm by resolve that accords with the scriptures. Having made the mind fixed in God, let him not think of anything at all.

Three ideas carry this. The first is the repeated word for gradually, meaning step by step. Krishna says it twice, and the doubling is the point: stillness arrives by small repeated efforts, not by one hard push. The second is buddhi, the intellect, the part that judges and decides. The third is dhriti, resolve, a grip that holds steady when the mood changes. Together they mean a decided mind, guided by the scriptures, that keeps returning to its work. The plain sense is that the intellect leads and the restless mind is brought to rest in God. Once it is fixed there, nothing else is held in thought. Krishna gives the reason across these verses: Arjuna's mind pulls toward many things, and peace cannot come while it is pulled. That is why the order matters. The mind is not emptied first. It is given one place to stand, and then other thoughts fall away. Shankara reads the resting place as the Self, so that the mind abides in it. Ramanuja reads it as the soul, steadied in its devotion to the Lord. Madhva reads it as the Lord, Vishnu, as the one object of the mind. All three keep the same order: a resolved intellect, patient effort, then one fixed mind.

A glass of muddy water left on a table. Nobody stirs it or skims it. The silt sinks a little at a time, and the water clears by itself. The resolve is the hand that leaves the glass alone, and the clear water is the mind resting.

1. Pick one time today, such as after your first cup of tea or just before sleep, and sit for five minutes with one simple focus: a short prayer, a name of God, or a single phrase you already love. 2. When your mind drifts, bring it back without scolding yourself. Count each return as a success. 3. Notice how many returns you needed, and what pulled you away most often. 4. Repeat at the same time tomorrow. Keep the five minutes short rather than stretching them.

It is three in the morning in a hospital corridor. A woman waits for news of her husband's surgery. Her phone is in her hand, and her mind runs through the worst outcomes one after another. Told to stop thinking, she cannot. The verse would change the order of things. First she decides, once, that she will rest her mind on one thing, perhaps a prayer her mother taught her. Then, each time the fear pulls her away, she comes back, gently, without a fight. Within the hour the fear has not gone, but there are gaps between its waves. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind ordered to go blank usually rebounds, and that a tired mind drifts more. The verse does not ask for blankness at the start. It asks for a place to rest and a patient return. The limit is plain: this does not tell her whether he will recover, it does not take away her fear, and it does not replace the surgeon or the nurses.
