Settled Passions, Highest Joy

Bhagavad Gita 6.27

Meaning · English

Supreme happiness comes to the yogi whose mind is peaceful, whose passions are subdued, who has become one with God and is free from sin.

Three descriptions of the yogi carry the verse. Prashanta means fully calmed, as when a fever has broken and the body lies quiet. Rajas is the stirring quality in us: craving, hurry, the push to get and to be. Shanta-rajasa means that push has died down. Brahma-bhuta means having become, or being established in, Brahman, which the glossary renders as God-realization. Akalmasha means without stain, free of sin. Krishna tells Arjuna that this yogi alone reaches the highest happiness. The reason follows from the verses before it: a mind pulled about by passion cannot rest, and without rest it cannot find anything lasting. When the stirring stops, the stain goes with it, and what remains is the joy of being rooted in God. The happiness is a result and not a prize to grab. Krishna asks Arjuna to see the work of calming the mind as the road to it. The commentators differ on brahma-bhuta. Shankara reads it as the yogi having become one with Brahman, the Self. Ramanuja reads it as the self coming to share the nature of Brahman while remaining distinct from it. Madhva keeps the soul always distinct from God and reads the phrase as a deep nearness to Him.

A snow globe is shaken, and for a while the flakes whirl so thickly that the little house inside cannot be seen. Set on a shelf, it clears by itself. The flakes are the passions, the clear glass is the calmed mind, and the house is the joy that was inside all along.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for three minutes with no phone and no task. Notice which wanting is loudest: food, news, a reply, a purchase. 2. Name it silently once, such as "wanting to be praised", and do not act on it for those three minutes. 3. Notice whether the body feels any quieter when the push is not obeyed. Do this each evening for a week. 4. Once during the week, delay one small craving by ten minutes and watch it fade.

A father paces a hospital corridor while his wife is in surgery. His mind runs ahead to every bad outcome, his hands will not stay still, and he checks his phone every half minute. Krishna's teaching of a calmed mind and subdued passions would change that hour in small steps. First he notices the restless push in himself and calls it by name. Then he sits down and lets his breath slow. He puts the phone away and brings his attention to the one thing in front of him, the bench, the floor, the sound of the ward. The racing does not obey him at once, but it loosens in a few minutes, and he can think and speak more gently to the nurse who comes out. Ordinary experience confirms that a hurried, craving mind sees poorly and a quieter one sees more. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, or that his fear or grief will vanish. It is no replacement for the surgeon or for the doctor's care. The text offers a steadiness to stand on, and it teaches that the deepest joy follows from that steadiness.
