Easy Bliss of Union

Bhagavad Gita 6.28

Meaning · English

Thus keeping the self always joined to God, the yogi is freed from sin. Easily, he comes into constant touch with the Supreme and reaches the highest bliss.

Three words carry this. Yunjan comes from the root that gives us yoga: to yoke, to join. Kalmasha is a stain, the grime that clings to a mind, here called sin. Sukha is ease or happiness, and the word for easily is the same word, so ease is both the road and the arrival. Krishna tells Arjuna that a yogi who keeps joining the self to God, again and again, always, loses the stains. Then contact with the Supreme stops being a rare event and becomes constant, and it comes without strain. What he reaches is happiness with no ceiling. The reason runs back through the verses before: a wandering mind is brought back and fixed on God, and the restlessness that stained it settles. Stain goes, so contact is easy. Contact is easy, so happiness is a home and not a visit. Krishna asks Arjuna for steady return more than force. Shankara reads the contact as the self knowing itself to be Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as the soul's direct, loving experience of the Supreme, who stays distinct from it. Madhva reads it as nearness to the Lord, won by devotion and his grace.

A window in a house has been dusty for months. Each morning someone wipes one more patch, and the sunlight, which was always outside, comes through a little more freely. Nothing is brought in. The cleaning is the practice, and the light that fills the room is the ease of constant contact.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and name one thing from the day that still clings to you: a sharp word, a small lie, a grudge. 2. Say it plainly to yourself, then turn your attention to one steady thing: a prayer word, your breath, or a lamp flame. 3. Each morning this week, give the same two minutes to that steady thing before your phone. 4. Notice whether coming back gets a little easier by the end of the week.

A bus driver on the night route snaps at a passenger near midnight. For the next hours he drives with the sting of it, replaying the moment at every red light. Krishna's teaching speaks to that stretch of road. First he notices the snap and calls it what it was, without dressing it up. Then he brings attention back to one steady point, the wheel under his hands, or a name of God he says silently. The replaying loosens each time he returns, and the next stop he greets the passenger kindly. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind carrying unsettled wrongs rests poorly, and that a mind put right with them can sit quietly. The verse does not promise that one night's effort makes him a yogi in constant touch with the Supreme, since the text speaks of joining the self always. It does not erase his tiredness or replace sleep, and it does not undo what he said to the passenger. It offers a way to put down the weight he is still carrying.
