Meaning · English
When the wise one knows his own self as no doer and no enjoyer, every movement of the mind dies away. His way of being, unbound and without contrivance, simply shines. The peace of the deluded, whose mind still reaches after things, is not like this. It is made up, a thing put on.
Four words carry this. Kartr is the doer, from the root kr, to do. Bhoktr is the enjoyer, from bhuj, to eat or take in. Together they name the two roles we think we play: the one who acts and the one who receives the fruit. Vritti is a turning or movement, from vrit, to turn. The mind's vrittis are its endless turnings: plans, wants, replays, worries. Dhira is the steady one, who is not shaken. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that when a person sees the self as neither doer nor enjoyer, those turnings fade by themselves. Nobody has to stop them. Their fuel was the belief in being the one who must get and keep. The knower then lives without any held-in effort, and that is what shines. The second half sets a counterfeit beside it. The fool also wants calm, but he still wants things, so his calm is arranged by effort, like a smile held through pain. The teaching comes here because Janaka's question is how peace is won. The answer is that it is not won. It shows when the doer is seen through. The listener is asked to tell staged calm from the real one.
A jar of muddy water settles when you set it down and take your hand away. Press on the surface to hold it flat and ripples spread. The mud sinking is the mind's turnings fading by themselves. The pressing hand is peace made by effort.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and do it for ten minutes. 2. While you do it, notice the thought 'I am the one doing this' and the thought 'what will I get from it'. Just notice them, without arguing. 3. This evening, recall one moment when you made yourself look calm. Compare it with a moment when calm simply arrived. Note how each felt in the body.
A mother sits by her feverish child at three in the morning, breathing by the book, jaw tight, telling herself to be calm. Each time the thermometer comes out, the effort rebuilds itself. The verse speaks to exactly this. Ashtavakra teaches that real peace is not a posture held against the mind's turnings. It shows when the belief that everything rests on her doing and her getting loosens. Step by step: she sees she is gripping, she sees the grip belongs to the one who thinks she must control the outcome, and the grip can ease without any new rule. Ordinary experience agrees that forced composure is tiring, and that tired people crack. The verse does not promise the fever will fall, the fear will vanish, or that she may skip the doctor. If the child worsens, she calls for help, and the teaching does not ask otherwise.
