Freedom Without Craving
Ashtavakra Gita 18.53
Meaning · English
The wise take their pleasure in great luxuries, or walk into mountain caves. They have dropped all imagining; they are unbound, their minds set free. Seeing a scholar of the scriptures, a deity, a holy place, a woman, a king, or someone dear, they honour each one fully. And in the heart of the wise one there is no craving at all.
Ashtavakra tells Janaka what freedom looks like from outside, and his answer is that it has no single look. Three words carry it. Dhira is the wise one, the steady person who is not shaken. Kalpana is imagining, the mind's habit of building a story about what a thing will give or take away. Vasana is craving, literally a lingering scent, the trace that desire leaves in the heart. Now the clauses. The wise may enjoy great luxuries, or may go into mountain caves. Neither is the mark, since palace and cave are only places. They are free of imagining, so no object arrives with a promise attached. They are unbound, and their minds are released. Then comes a list: a learned scholar, a deity, a holy place, a woman, a king, a loved one. The wise one sees each and honours each. Worship, courtesy and affection are all there. Yet no craving stays in the heart afterwards. Why is this taught here? Janaka has asked how freedom is won, and a listener could conclude that it means giving up pleasure, or that honouring holy things means wanting something from them. Ashtavakra says the knot is in the heart, not in the thing seen. The listener is asked to look for where craving actually lives, and to stop judging freedom by what a person owns or avoids.
A man walks through a fair just after a full meal. He admires the sweet stalls, the bright cloth, the music, and buys nothing, because no hunger pulls at him. The fair is the world with its pleasures and honours. The full stomach is a heart that needs nothing from any of it.
1. Today, when something catches your eye, a shop window or a sweet or an advertisement, look at it fully for ten seconds. 2. Notice whether a small "I want" rises, and whether it follows you when you walk on. 3. This evening, greet one person you respect, an elder or a teacher, with real courtesy and ask nothing of them. 4. Before sleep, recall which of the two left a trace in you, and which left none.
A retired schoolteacher is invited to the grand new house of a former pupil, now wealthy. She stands in the marble hall with tea in a thin china cup. Two pulls start at once: a small ache of comparison, and a wish to be admired in return. The verse would change the moment in steps. She sees the house as it is, with its light and its polish, and enjoys it without arguing with it. She honours the pupil and is glad of his success, with no private account of what she lacks. Then she notices whether any want stays behind when she goes out the gate. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a full stomach changes how a table of food looks. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that envy will never rise, and it does not take away grief, worry about money, or the need to meet real needs. It describes a heart in which wanting has no hold, and does not claim a method that gets anyone there by tonight.
