Ashtavakra Gita 18.55

Meaning · English

Servants, sons, wives, daughters' children and kinsmen laugh at him and call him shameful. The yogi is not disturbed in the least. Satisfied, he is yet not satisfied; pained, he is yet not pained. His wondrous state, of one kind and then another, only those who are like him can know.

Three words carry the verse. Yogi here means one who is joined to the self, settled in knowing what he is. Vikriti means change or distortion, from the root kri, to do, with the prefix vi, apart: the mind bent out of its shape. Santushta means contented, from tush, to be pleased. The first half is plain. The people closest to him, household and kin, laugh and call him a disgrace. He does not bend, not even a little. The second half is a riddle. He is contented, and still not contented. He is pained, and still not pained. Ashtavakra's teaching is that pleasure and pain pass through the mind like weather, while the knower is the witness of them and is untouched. Contentment that depends on getting something can be lost, so his is not that kind. It does not hang on anything. Pain does show up, but there is no one inside it who is hurt. This is why his state is called wondrous, and why only those like him can know it: from outside it looks like contradiction. It is taught here because Janaka has been hearing how the knower lives, and the closest people are the hardest test of it. The verse asks the listener to see what steadiness would be, and not to judge it by how it looks.

A rock stands in a stream. Water hits it from every side, loud and cold, and the rock stays where it is, though the water is plainly there. The water is the mockery of family, the pleasure and the pain. The rock is the witness, which is touched by all of it and moved by none.

1. Next time someone close to you teases or criticises you, wait before answering. Count five slow breaths. 2. In those breaths, notice where the sting sits in the body, and that you are the one noticing it. 3. Tonight, for two minutes, name one pleasure and one pain from the day. Say: both came and both went, and I saw them.

Picture a man at a family dinner. He has just told his brothers and his grown son he is leaving the business to teach, and they laugh. His uncle says it is a shame. His face heats. He wants to defend himself, or to give in so the laughing stops. Now see what the verse would change, step by step. He feels the heat and the tightness, and he lets them be there. He does not need the table to agree. He answers once, calmly, or says nothing, and the meal goes on. Ordinary experience confirms that a person who is not scrambling for approval speaks more clearly. The text teaches more than this: it says the knower is never really moved, because the self is the witness. The verse does not promise the laughter will not hurt, that family will come round, or that grief at being scorned will not come. It also does not replace a doctor or a counsellor for someone whose distress is heavy and will not lift.
