Duty as Bondage
Ashtavakra Gita 18.57
Meaning · English
The feeling that something must be done is itself the round of birth and death. The wise do not see it. They are empty of form, formless, unchanging, free of disease. The fool is restless everywhere, even when he does nothing. The skilled one, even while doing what has to be done, stays untroubled.
Three words carry this. Kartavyata is the sense of duty, the inner feeling that something is owed and must be done. Samsara is the round of becoming, from sam, together, and sri, to flow: the ceaseless running on. Nirakula means untroubled, from a, not, and akula, crowded or thrown into confusion. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the weight of obligation, more than any task, is what keeps samsara turning. The wise do not see that weight at all. They are described as without shape, without change and without sickness, because they know themselves as the witness, which no task touches. Then he sets two people side by side. The fool does nothing and is still agitated, because the mind keeps pushing him from inside. The skilled one does what is in front of him and stays level. The difference lies in the agitation, not the amount of work. Janaka has asked how peace is won, and the answer is that peace never depended on doing less. It asks the listener to look at the felt burden behind the work, to see that it is added by the mind, and that the hands may move without it.
Two men carry the same sack of rice up the same stairs. One grips it and curses every step. The other lets it ride on his shoulder and talks easily as he climbs. The work is equal. Only the clenching differs, and the clenching is the sense of duty.
1. Pick one ordinary chore today, such as washing dishes or answering a message. 2. Before you start, notice whether a tightness of must-do sits in your chest or jaw. 3. Do the chore at an even pace, without hurrying toward the end. 4. Afterward, note in one line whether the task or the tightness was heavier.
A mother stands in the kitchen at ten at night. Lunches are unpacked, a form needs signing, and her own mother has called twice. She is not yet doing any of it, but her shoulders are up and her breath is short. The pressure of everything undone has arrived before the first task. The verse says that this pressure, more than the work, is what wears a person down. Step by step: she sees the tightness as separate from the list, lets her shoulders drop, and takes the form first. The chores stay the same size. What shifts is that she does one thing at a time, without the whole pile pressing on her. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind rehearsing its burdens tires more than hands that are simply working. The verse does not promise that the work shrinks, that grief or illness lifts, or that a person who is truly overwhelmed needs no help. Someone who is exhausted for weeks should see a doctor, and sharing the load is sensible.
