He sits at ease, lies down to sleep at ease, comes and goes at ease. He speaks at ease and eats at ease. Even in the middle of worldly dealings, his mind stays quiet. By his very nature he feels no distress, and he goes about his affairs like anyone else. Like a great lake, undisturbed, with every affliction gone, he shines.

Three words carry this. Shanta-dhih is the quiet-minded one: shanta means stilled, dhih means mind or understanding. Vyavahara is everyday dealing, the buying, talking, working and travelling that fill a day. Kleshas are afflictions, from the root klish, to torment, the inner pains that sit under ordinary troubles. Ashtavakra lists the plainest acts: sitting, sleeping, walking, speaking, eating. He says the one who knows the self does each of them at ease. His life is not withdrawn. He is in the thick of dealings and still is not shaken. Pain does not arise in him by nature, and he behaves like everyone around him. Nothing in his outward life marks him out. The only difference lies in what is missing: the strain, the grasping, the sense that something must be fixed before he can rest. Ashtavakra compares him to a vast lake that does not churn. King Janaka has been asking how a knower lives. The answer is that he lives like anyone, minus the affliction. This asks the listener to stop looking for the knower in robes and rituals, and to look at how ordinary acts are done.

A big village water tank. Buckets dip in all day, children splash at the edge, rain pocks the surface. The ripples spread and vanish, and the water below never moves. The tank is the knower: every ordinary act touches him, and none of it reaches the depth.

1. Pick one ordinary act today, such as the first cup of tea or a short walk, and give it your whole attention for five minutes. 2. While doing it, notice where your jaw, shoulders and hands are tight, and let them be as loose as the act allows. 3. Notice whether the act needs the hurry you were bringing to it. 4. Repeat with one more act, such as eating a meal sitting down, before the day ends.

A cook at a wedding kitchen starts stirring a huge pot at five in the morning. Two hundred guests are coming. Her jaw is clenched, her shoulders are up by her ears, and she snaps at the boy carrying onions. The work is real and cannot be put off. Ashtavakra's teaching would change what she brings to it, not what she does. She keeps stirring. The clench in her jaw is noticed and lets go. The snap at the boy does not come. When tea arrives she drinks it sitting down and tastes it. Ordinary experience agrees that a tight body spends effort on nothing and makes the work no faster. Ashtavakra teaches that the knower's ease does not depend on how the day goes. It is his nature. It does not promise that the pot will not burn, that the guests will be kind, or that a body worn out by long hours will not need rest. A person who is ill or exhausted still needs proper care.
