Even the fool's giving up turns into busy doing. Even the steady one's doing brings the fruit of giving up. Dispassion toward possessions is what is mostly seen in the fool. For one whose hope in the body has melted away, where is attachment, and where is aversion?

Three words carry the teaching. Nivritti is turning back, withdrawal, from ni, back, and vrit, to turn. Pravritti is turning forth, activity, the same root with the opposite direction. Vairagya is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. A fourth word, asha, is hope or craving, the leaning toward what the body wants. Ashtavakra first says that the fool's withdrawal becomes activity. The fool quits the world as a project, and the quitting needs plans, effort, vows and watching. So the giving up is just more doing. The steady one, the dhira, may be busy all day, yet the work leaves no trace, and what it leaves behind is what withdrawal was meant to give. Then he says dispassion toward possessions is mostly seen in the fool. Refusing things is a display, and it takes a grasping mind to refuse so hard. Last comes a question. When hope in the body has dissolved, where is attachment, and where is dislike? Both depend on a body-bound self that needs things. Without that self, neither has a place to stand. He teaches this to Janaka because Janaka asked how dispassion is won. The answer is that it is not won by acts of giving up. It is seen once the one who craves is no longer taken to be real. The text asks the listener to look at the leaning itself, not at the pile of things.

Someone furious at a heavy bag slings it to the floor, then stands guard over it, glaring. Another simply sets the bag down and walks away with empty hands. The first has put it down yet is still tied to it. The second shows what the verse calls true dispassion.

1. Pick one thing you have recently given up or are avoiding, such as a food, a habit or an argument. 2. Today, notice how many times your mind goes back to it. Count quietly, no more than that. 3. Choose one ordinary task, such as washing dishes, and do it without any thought of gain or dislike. Watch what the mind does for the ten minutes it lasts. 4. In the evening, ask which was louder, the refusing or the doing.

A retired shopkeeper hands the shop to his son and announces he is done with money. By ten each morning he has phoned twice to ask about the day's takings, and by noon he is irritated that the son has changed the shelves. He has stopped working, yet he cannot rest. The verse reads this as renunciation turned into activity, since the refusing has itself become a job. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, the old man sees that the urge to check is a leaning of the mind, not a duty. Second, he stops treating the leaning as an enemy to be beaten, because fighting it keeps his attention on it. Third, he lets the leaning rise and pass, and the phone stays in his pocket for a little longer each day. Ordinary experience agrees that what we forbid ourselves often occupies us most. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that he will stop caring about the shop, or that worry and grief at the change will vanish. It does not replace the practical business of handing over a livelihood, or a doctor's advice if the unrest turns into sleeplessness or low mood.
