Meaning · English
The deluded one's sight is always caught in imagining and un-imagining. The one settled in the self still has the imagined, but his sight of it is no sight at all. The sage who is free of desire in every undertaking moves about like a child. No stain touches that pure one, even while the action is being done.
Two words carry this. Bhavana is imagining, from bhu, to become: the mind making something be, a hope, a plan, a picture of how things should turn out. Abhavana is its opposite, imagining the thing away. Nishkama is desireless, kama (craving) with the craving taken out. Ashtavakra says the deluded person's seeing is always busy with these two. He is either building a picture or pulling one down, and he sees little else. The one at home in himself still has imagining going on, but it leaves no mark on him. His seeing is like not-seeing, because nothing in it grips. Then he gives the picture of the sage. He begins every undertaking with no craving behind it and moves like a child. A child acts wholly and keeps no accounts. Lepa, stain, is what sticks to a doer who wants results: the sense of "I did this, and it must come to that." The pure one does the action in full, and the text says no stain touches him even as it is being done. This answers a worry the chapter has been circling. If peace means not being bound, does the knower have to stop acting? Ashtavakra says no. What binds is the wanting that rides along with the deed, not the deed itself.
A child on a beach packs a sandcastle with full attention, towers and a moat. A wave takes it. The child laughs and starts on a channel for the water. Nothing from the first castle stays on its hands. The work was whole, and no claim was left behind it.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or sweeping a floor, and take ten minutes to do it fully. 2. While you work, notice each time the mind drifts to how it will be judged or what it will lead to. Just notice it, and come back to the hands. 3. When the task is done, notice whether you reach for praise or a verdict. Leave it unclaimed and go on to the next thing.
A woman is ladling dal at a community kitchen after a neighbour's funeral. Her feet ache. Part of her is counting whether anyone will notice the work, and part is rehearsing how it could go wrong. The ladle keeps moving, but she is somewhere else, tight in the shoulders and tired in a way the work alone does not explain. The verse would change this in small steps. She would see the counting and the rehearsing as imagining, a picture of praise or failure laid over the pot. She would let it drop and look at the pot, the steam, the next plate held out. The work would still be done, and done fully, but with nothing riding on how it is received. Ordinary experience bears out that effort feels lighter when the mind is on the task than when it is on the audience. For Ashtavakra, though, the point is the lack of stain, not the lightness. The verse does not promise that her feet will stop aching or that the grief in the room will lift. It does not replace rest, food, or a doctor if she is unwell.
