Ashtavakra Gita 13.3

Meaning · English

Having reflected truly that nothing whatever is ever done, I do whatever comes to be done, and then I rest, at ease, just as I am.

Three words carry the teaching. Kṛta means what is done, an act finished. Tattvataḥ means in truth, from tattva, 'that-ness', the way a thing really is. Yathāsukham means as it comes easily, with no strain. The first line says Janaka has thought it through to the real ground, and from there nothing whatever is done. The Gita teaches that the self is the witness. It does not act, so no deed ever touches it. The second line says that when some task arrives, he does it. He does not refuse the work or run from it. The third says that after doing it he rests at ease. Nothing is carried forward. This answers the question Janaka began with, how freedom is won and what it looks like. His answer is that it looks ordinary. Hands move and duties are met, but no one inside is claiming the deed, bargaining over it or dreading its result. The verse asks the listener to see that the doer is a borrowed idea, and that work can go on without it. Only the weight of ownership falls away. The work itself stays.

A boat passes through a canal, and the water parts before it and closes behind it. The water does all the moving yet keeps no mark of the boat. The knower is the water, and each task is a boat passing through.

1. Choose one routine chore today, such as washing dishes or answering one message. 2. Do it fully, then stop the moment it is finished. 3. Afterward, notice whether your mind goes back to praise yourself or to worry over it. Each time it does, let the chore stay finished. 4. Before sleep, recall one task done that way and sit quietly for a minute.

A woman in a hospital corridor has just signed the consent form for her father's surgery. Her pen is down, and her mind is already running the what-ifs. Did she choose rightly? Should she have asked another doctor? Janaka's words would change the moment in steps. First, the signing is done, and what arrived to be done has been done. Second, she sees that the replaying adds nothing to the page already signed. Third, she lets her hands rest and sits beside the bed, still doing what comes, such as holding his hand and fetching water. Ordinary experience bears out one part of this: a mind that keeps reopening a finished act grows tired and tight. The text goes further and teaches that the self never acts at all, and it says this as its own teaching. The verse does not promise that the surgery will succeed, and it does not remove her fear or any grief that follows. It also gives no reason to skip medical advice.
