Meaning · English

Embodied yogis are bound by their fixed states of action and of inaction. Free of any joining or parting, I rest at ease. Gain and loss are not mine through standing, nor through walking, nor through lying down. Standing, walking or sleeping, I therefore rest at ease.

Janaka first looks at the practising yogis. The word dehastha means standing in the body: they take the body as home. The word nirbandha means a fixed insistence. Such yogis cling to a chosen state, doing or not doing, as the thing that secures them. Janaka says he is free of this, because he is free of samyoga and ayoga, joining and parting. In the Gita's non-dual teaching the self is the witness. Nothing can be joined to it, so nothing can leave it either. Then he turns to the body's three postures: sthiti (standing), gati (going), shayana (lying down). Artha and anartha are gain and loss, what helps and what harms. He says neither comes to him by any posture. Pacing, working or sleeping adds nothing to the self and takes nothing from it. That is why he can stand, walk or sleep with equal ease. The question behind it is whether freedom needs a particular way of holding the body or mind. Janaka answers that it does not, since the one who knows is not made or unmade by what the body does. It asks the listener to look at where they think the gain and loss actually land.

A passenger on a moving train may sit, stand in the aisle or lie on a berth. The station ahead does not come nearer or farther by any of it. The postures are the body's, and the journey is the train's. In the same way, the self's gain and loss are not settled by what the body does.

1. Today, choose one stretch of ten minutes when you are waiting for news or an outcome. 2. Change posture three times: sit, stand, lie down or walk. 3. Each time, ask whether the outcome moved even slightly because of what you did. 4. Notice who is watching all three postures.

A man waits for a biopsy result. He sits, then paces the hallway, then lies awake at two in the morning, shifting as if the right position might change the answer. The verse names what he is doing. He is treating posture as if it were a lever on gain and loss. The Ashtavakra Gita says the self, the witness, is not touched by gain or loss through standing, walking or sleeping. In that moment, the man can see that the result is already fixed and that no posture reaches it. He can let the body sit, pace or sleep as it needs, and stop asking each position to carry his hope. Ordinary experience agrees on the small point that worry does not alter a lab report. The verse does not promise that fear will not come, that the result will be good or that grief will be spared. It is also not a reason to skip the doctor, the follow-up visit or the treatment the result may call for.
