Meaning · English

In sleep I lose nothing, and in effort I win nothing. Leaving behind both the falling and the rejoicing, I rest at ease. Seeing again and again that things carry pleasure and the rest in a fixed order, I leave behind the good and the bad, and I rest at ease.

King Janaka is describing his own state, not giving an order. Three words carry it. Hani is loss, something taken from you. Siddhi is success, something achieved. Yathasukham means at ease, in whatever way is comfortable; nothing is forced, not even stillness. Bhava means a thing that comes into being, here the states and happenings that arise and pass. The first clause says that when he sleeps he loses nothing, and when he strives he gains nothing. Janaka now knows himself as the witness, and the witness is the same asleep or busy. The next clause says he lets go of ruin and of delighted rising alike, and rests. The last clause says he has looked at happenings again and again and seen how they run: pleasure and its companions come in a set pattern, one following another. Having seen the pattern, he puts down good and bad as claims on him. This follows Ashtavakra's teaching that the self is the witness and already free. If that is so, gain and loss belong to body, mind and circumstance, and never touch the knower. The verse asks the listener to look at the pattern directly and often, until its pull is seen for what it is.

A window pane in a house stays the same through a whole day of weather. Sun, rain, a hailstorm and dusk all cross it, and none leaves a mark. The glass is the witness. The weather is gain and loss, joy and ruin, passing over what is never changed by them.

1. Tonight, before sleep, name one thing that went well today and one that went badly. Say each aloud in a single plain sentence. 2. Notice who is doing the noticing, the one who watched both events. Rest there for one minute. 3. Tomorrow, when a small win or a small setback arrives, say quietly, "it came, it will go," and carry on with the task in front of you.

A tailor loses a large order in the afternoon. At two in the morning he is still awake, adding up what the loss will cost, and every figure seems larger than it did by daylight. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind counts its losses heavily. The verse would change the night in steps. First, the tailor sees that the loss is a happening, one among many that have come and gone in his working life, in a pattern he already knows: a good month, a bad month, a good month. Second, he sees that the one who watches the worry is not itself reduced by the order. Third, he lets the rising and falling of hope stop being his master, and he rests, since sleep takes nothing from him and the lying awake wins nothing. In the morning he can act on the loss with a clearer head. The verse does not promise that the money returns, that the worry never visits, or that a failing business needs no advice. It does not replace a doctor for someone whose sleeplessness has become illness. It describes how Janaka rests once he has seen what he is.
