Awake like a sleeper
Ashtavakra Gita 14.1
Meaning · English
Whoever is empty in mind by nature, yet through inattention seems to busy himself with things and states of being, is like a man asleep who is awake, for his remembering has worn away.
King Janaka is describing his own state, and it takes a few terms to hear him. Chitta is the mind, the part that gathers impressions and turns them over. Shunya means empty, and prakriti means one's own nature, so a mind empty by its own nature is not a mind emptied by effort. Pramada is a lapse, a loss of watchfulness. Bhavabhavana is the habit of imagining things as being and not being: this is mine, that is gone. Samsmarana is remembering, the mind carrying the past forward, and Janaka says his has worn away. Taken clause by clause: his mind is empty of itself, yet at times it seems to take up things and conditions through a lapse, and this is only how it looks from outside. He is like a sleeper who is awake. Ashtavakra has taught that the self is the witness and already free. Janaka answers by showing what that freedom looks like when it lives in a person. Acts go on, but nothing is held on to and no story is stored. The text asks the listener to see that freedom in this way, not as a heightened state but as a mind that has stopped keeping accounts.
A man walks the road home that he has walked for twenty years. Turns are made, a cart is avoided, a neighbour is greeted, and at the door he cannot say how he came. The feet did the road and nothing was kept. Janaka's life is like that walk: the acts happen, and no remembering carries them.
1. Choose one routine task today, such as washing dishes or walking a familiar lane, and give it ten minutes. 2. While it goes on, notice that the hands and feet know what to do without any commentary from you. 3. When a thought says this is mine or this went badly, notice it as a passing sound and let the task continue. 4. At night, name one event from the day that you are not carrying any more.
A grandmother sits on the step after a long wedding day, the last guests gone, her hands still folding napkins. The day held a quarrel over seating and a dish that came out wrong. Janaka's words describe her at that moment as the text would wish. The hands keep working, but no one is tallying who was rude or what failed. The quarrel was real when it happened, and now it is not being replayed. In the verse, the mind rests in its own emptiness and does not store the day. Ordinary experience agrees that a task done a thousand times needs no running commentary, and that a mind not rehearsing the past is lighter. Step by step, the verse changes that evening: the work continues, the account is not opened, and sleep comes without a verdict on the day. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the quarrel never hurt, that grief will not arrive, or that tiredness and illness are absent. It describes a mind that does not hold on to them, and it does not replace rest or a doctor where either is needed.
