Partiality and cruelty do not attach to God, because creation depends on something else. So the scripture shows.
The question: if God made the world, why is it so uneven? Some beings are born into great comfort, some into constant pain, some in between. That looks like favouritism, even cruelty. The sutra answers that neither charge sticks, because God does not create in a vacuum. Shankara explains that creation is relative to something: the past deeds of the beings being born, their dharma (merit) and adharma (demerit). God supplies the common ground, while each being's own karma, meaning action and its fruit, accounts for the difference. Shankara adds that scripture says so: God has a person do good who is to be raised, and bad who is to be lowered, and one becomes good by good action, bad by bad. Ramanuja and Madhva also defend God against the charge, though they read the sutra's wording differently.
Rain falls evenly on a field sown with rice and barley. Each seed comes up as its own plant, with its own height and fruit, and the rain is not blamed for the barley's difference from the rice. God, in Shankara's comparison, is the rain; each being's past deeds are the seed.
The problem of evil is still a live question in philosophy. Many thinkers hold that unequal suffering is hard to square with a perfectly good creator, and the deeds-based reply is one old answer, close to theodicies that put the burden on free agents. Today's understanding sees plainly that much inequality has causes we can name: genes, accident, family, society, none of which is a person's earlier deed. Nothing in physiology or psychology supports karma carried from a previous life, and it cannot be tested. It also risks blaming the sufferer. What it does keep is the thought that character and choices shape a life. Whether any deeper fairness exists is not something science can settle.
