Matter Cannot Build Order

Brahma Sutras 2.2.1

Meaning · English

Because an ordered arrangement cannot be explained, the unconscious cannot be what is inferred as the world's cause; and because of its activity, too, it cannot.

Samkhya holds that the world comes from pradhana, also called prakriti: a single unconscious stuff made of three strands (gunas), pleasure, pain and dullness, which evolves by its own nature to serve the conscious self, the purusha. Badarayana objects with two reasons. First, racana: the world is an arrangement. Bodies, forests and seasons have parts fitted to purposes. Second, pravritti: matter would have to start acting by itself. Shankara explains that in ordinary experience, houses, beds and gardens are built only by intelligent craftsmen, never by clods and stones alone. Even clay becomes a pot only when a potter guides it. So an unconscious cause, left alone, should not produce so finely fitted a world. Shankara adds that the word 'and' brings in a further objection: pleasure and pain are felt inwardly, while sounds and objects are outside, so outer things are not plainly made of the stuff of feeling. The conclusion is that the world's cause should be inferred as conscious.

Picture a pile of bricks, timber and tiles left in an empty field for a thousand years. Weather may scatter them or crack them, but a house with a kitchen, stairs and a roof never rises by itself. A builder who has the plan in mind is needed. Samkhya's matter is the pile; Badarayana says the plan needs a mind.

The sutra is an argument from design, and it meets a strong modern reply. Evolution by natural selection explains how complex, well-fitted living bodies arise from unguided processes, and physics shows order such as crystals and galaxies forming from plain laws without a planner. So the claim that order requires a conscious maker is not accepted in mainstream science. Samkhya could answer that the laws themselves, and why there are laws at all, still need explaining, and that question remains open. The wider issue, whether mind is fundamental or arises from matter, is the debate between idealism, panpsychism and physicalism. Science cannot settle that debate today. The argument shows what each side must explain, but it does not decide between them.
