The First Push Has No Source

Brahma Sutras 2.2.11

Meaning · English

In either case there is no action, and therefore the absence of that: whether the unseen cause is held to act in the atoms or to lie in the self, the first motion in the atoms cannot arise.

The atomists (Vaisheshika school) say the world began when atoms, resting apart, began to move and join. Badarayana asks what set the first atom moving. Shankara's commentary takes this in two steps. Movement needs a cause. Suppose the cause is adrishta, the unseen force of past deeds. Or suppose it is a cause we actually observe, such as an effort of will or a collision. Take the observed kinds first. Effort belongs to a self working through a body and mind, and in that state of dissolution no body exists, so no effort can arise. A collision needs something already moving. Take the unseen force next: it has to lodge somewhere, in the self or in the atoms, and neither placement explains a push. So in either case the first action in the atoms has no source, and without it atoms never combine into a world. Ramanuja and Madhva use the sutra against atomism too, since they also hold that God is the world's cause.

Picture a billiard table in a sealed, empty hall: every ball at rest, no player, no cue, no tremor in the floor. Each ball can only move if struck by another moving ball or a hand. The atomists' resting atoms are those balls, and the missing cue is the first push no one can supply.

Physics today treats this sort of question differently. Newtonian motion needs a cause, but the first law says a body at rest simply stays at rest, which is the same worry in other words. Modern cosmology does not picture resting atoms waiting for a push. Matter and energy are described together with their dynamics, and quantum fields fluctuate by their own nature, so the 'first motion' is not posed as the sutra poses it. Whether the universe's beginning needs any explanation at all, and what would count as one, is still debated among physicists and philosophers. Adrishta, an unseen force of moral deeds moving matter, has no counterpart in physics and no evidence behind it. The sutra's logic still stands as a fair test: a theory of origins must say what gets things going.
