Meaning · English

Love shines forth in some vessel fit to hold it. It is free of the three strands of nature and free of wanting. It grows with every moment and is never broken. It is subtler than the subtlest thing, and it is known only by living it.

Narada gives love its marks, after saying in the sutra before that it cannot be put into words. Take the words one at a time. Patra is a vessel, a person fit to hold something. Guna means a strand or quality of nature, the pulls of dullness, restlessness and clarity that colour ordinary feeling. Kama is wanting, the reach for a return. Anubhava is direct experience, knowing by living it and not by hearsay. Now the clauses. Love shines in some vessel, and the word kvapi, somewhere, tells us it does not appear everywhere. It is free of the strands, so it is not a mood that rises and sinks with them. It is free of wanting, so it asks nothing back. It grows every moment, so it is never finished or stored away. It is unbroken, with no gaps in it. It is subtler than the subtlest, so no description catches it. Its form is experience itself. Narada teaches this because a listener who hears that love cannot be told will ask how to recognize it. He answers by naming its marks. What it asks of the listener is to become a worthy vessel: to love without bargaining, and to let it deepen.

A clay lamp holds a small flame. The flame asks nothing of the oil except that the oil stay clean and keep burning, and it burns steadier as the wick settles. Love is the flame, and the person who holds it without bargaining is the lamp.

1. Choose one person you love, and one small kindness for them today that they will never learn came from you. 2. Do it quietly, without mentioning it or waiting for thanks. 3. Afterward, spend two minutes noticing whether any part of you wanted something back, and what that wanting felt like. 4. Repeat tomorrow, and see whether the wanting has grown lighter.

A man stands at the kitchen counter late in the evening, packing his elderly father's tablets into a weekly box. His father has stopped saying thank you. The man feels the old tally start up: what he has given, what he is owed. The verse names that tally as the thing love is free of. Narada says love that is free of wanting grows with every moment. So the man can notice the tally as it starts, and keep filling the box anyway. Each small act done without a bargain becomes part of a care that is steady and unbroken. Ordinary experience confirms that giving with a ledger in mind leaves a person tired and resentful, while giving freely often leaves a quiet warmth. The verse speaks of love that is lived, and it offers no technique. It does not promise the father will become grateful, and it does not make the work lighter or the illness less. A man worn out by caregiving still needs rest, help from others, and the doctor's guidance for his father's care.
