The witness, the person, the supreme Self and the Lord are known. Where no hope remains, I have no worry about bondage or release, no care for freedom. Inside, I am empty of imagining. Outside, I move as I please, like one bewildered. Only those like me understand such states.
Three words carry this. Sakshi is the witness, from sa-akshi, 'with the eye': the one who watches without taking part. Nairashya is the absence of hope, from nir-asha, 'without expectation'. Vikalpa is imagining, a mind's act of building a notion and then living inside it. Janaka says the witness, the person, the supreme Self and the Lord are all known. The text treats these as names for one knowing. Once that is known, the old worry about bondage and release drops away, because he finds nothing that needs rescuing and nothing left to hope for. Freedom is not a prize he is still chasing. Then he describes how he lives. Within, the mind has stopped making up stories. Without, he acts freely, following no rule of display. To onlookers he may seem dazed, like someone out of his senses. Janaka adds that only one in the same state can read such conduct. Why say this here? Janaka has just spoken of wealth, friends and scripture falling away. Now he shows what is left: not a blank but a free, odd-looking, ordinary life. The teaching asks the listener to stop judging the knower by outward behaviour, and to see that the question of being bound or freed belongs to imagining, which has ended.
Picture a lake after the wind drops. The surface lies flat, and ducks cross it, children throw stones, boats drift, and the water stays as it was. The still lake is the mind without imagining. The crossing ducks are the free one's unplanned movements, which look random but disturb nothing.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and give it ten minutes. 2. While you do it, notice each time the mind starts building a story about whether you are doing well, improving, or falling short. 3. Each time, simply name it as a story and go back to the task. 4. Tonight, notice whether you judged anyone's odd behaviour today, and whether you knew what was going on inside them.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor while her father is in surgery. Her mind keeps drafting versions of the next hour: the surgeon walking out, the worst news, the blame she might owe herself. Her hands are cold, and she cannot read the magazine in her lap. The verse, as the text teaches it, points at that drafting. The worry about how things will turn out is a stream of imagined scenes, and the witness is the one who sees them arise and pass. She might notice the scene-making as it happens, let one fade without feeding it, and sit with the plain facts: a bench, a clock, her breathing. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind busy rehearsing disasters feels worse than a mind attending to the present. The verse also says the freed one may look strange to others. It is a reminder not to measure a stranger's calm or distress by appearance alone. The limit is plain. It does not make the surgery go well, remove her fear, or spare her grief if the news is bad. And if worry becomes constant or overwhelming, a doctor is the right person to talk to.
