One Hearing Is Enough
Ashtavakra Gita 15.1
Meaning · English
One whose mind is clear is fulfilled by a teaching given just as it is. Another may go on enquiring all his life and still be bewildered there.
Three words carry it. Kritartha means one whose task is done: krita is done, artha is the aim. Sattvabuddhi is a mind of clarity, where sattva is lucidity, like water settled and clear. Jijnasu is one who wishes to know, the eager enquirer. Vimuhyati means is bewildered, from muh, to be confused or clouded. Ashtavakra tells King Janaka that a teaching given exactly as it is, plainly and without ornament, is enough for a clear mind. Hearing it, that person has nothing left to do. The aim is met. The second person is also an enquirer, and keeps enquiring to the end of life. Yet he remains bewildered in the very place where the first one was finished. The difference Ashtavakra names is not effort or years of study. It is the clearness of the mind that receives the words. The text has been telling Janaka that the self is the witness and already free, so there is nothing to be reached by labour. A mind still busy making a goal out of knowing keeps circling and never rests on what was said. The verse asks the listener to see which of the two he is: one who hears and is done, or one who keeps asking after the answer has been given.
A man hunts through every drawer for his spectacles. A friend says they are on his head. One man touches his forehead and the search is over. Another thanks her, then goes back to the drawers. The spectacles are the self, already there, and the drawers are endless enquiry.
1. Choose one plain true sentence you already know, such as "I am the one who sees these thoughts." 2. Sit for five minutes today, at a quiet hour, and read it once, slowly. 3. Stop there. Do not look up another book or explanation for the rest of that day. 4. In the evening, notice whether the urge to search for more came back, and where in the body you felt it.
A retired schoolteacher sits at her kitchen table at night. On the shelf behind her are twelve books on calm, and beside her a notebook full of their advice. She is awake again at three, turning over the same worry. Ashtavakra's teaching starts from the notebook. He says a plain teaching, heard by a clear mind, finishes the matter. So she might pick one sentence the books keep repeating and read it once. She would then notice that the worry is being watched by someone not inside it. Then she could close the notebook and let the next hour be ordinary. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, crowded mind takes in very little, however much it reads. The text speaks of a mind made clear, and clearness is not gained by adding more. The teaching does not promise the worry will stop, nor that grief or fear will lift. If sleeplessness goes on for weeks, she should see a doctor, and the verse does not stand in for that.
