Ravana's Threat

The story · English

High in the branches, hidden among the leaves, the vanaras kept watching Rama's wife. As the night thinned toward morning he heard the giants of the city begin their hymns of prayer and praise, sung by priests who knew the Vedas and every branch of the sacred rites. Then music rose through the palace, loud enough to wake the king of the giants. The moment Ravana opened his eyes, his first thought was of the beautiful queen he burned for, and he could not hold that longing down. He dressed himself in his finest clothes and hurried out to the garden where she was kept. It was a lovely place, full of the best flowers and fruit. The birds there never stopped singing, and tall deer bent their heads to drink at the grassy edge of a little stream.

He came toward the Ashoka grove with a hundred women around him, the way Indra moves among the beauties of heaven. Some walked beside him holding whisks, fans and golden lamps. Others went ahead carrying pure water in golden jars. Some bore golden plates piled with delicacies, and some carried wine in heavy bowls set with shining gems. One held a silken canopy shaped like a swan over his head, and another walked behind him with his sceptre. The women glittered around him like lightning around a cloud, their belts and ornaments chiming as they went. Torches of gold and silver burned scented oil. Desire blazed in his eyes, and he looked like Love himself with his bow set down. From the tree the vanaras stared in wonder at the king standing among his women, like the full moon among the stars.

When Sita saw him beside her, glowing with pride, fear and trembling took hold of her whole body. She sat silent, eyes lowered, her arms folded across her breast, hiding herself as best she could from his bold stare. All around her the fierce demon women kept watch, and she sighed and wept. Then she sank down onto the bare earth like a branch cut from a tree, and lay there struggling with her despair, while her thoughts flew to her husband, the best of kings. She had been born noble and delicate, and now she was brought down to grief and a lowly state. She was like sacred learning that has faded, like hope when its dreams are over, like the moon labouring in eclipse, like a pond whose lilies have all died, like an army whose king has run away.

Ravana looked at her with longing and spoke softly. "Lotus-eyed lady, why do you hide yourself from me? Stop pushing me away. Love me, because I love you. Let go of your fear. There is no giant here and no man. It is our right to take by force any woman we want, but I will not lay rough hands on someone I love this much. Show me some small sign of favour. Don't stay in love with your sorrow. Lying on the cold ground, your hair in a single braid, wasting yourself with fasting, none of this suits you. You were made for the finest garlands, for sandalwood and aloe, pearls and clothes fit for paradise, rich food, a soft bed, music and dancing. I think when the Creator made you, he stopped, because he never made anyone to rival you. Love me while we are young."

"Every jewel I have taken from every land I have plundered, I give you today, and I lay my kingdom at your feet. I will overrun the whole earth, leave no town unconquered, and offer it all to Janaka for your sake. No god or man can stand against me. I met the Gods and the Asuras in battle, beat their armies to the ground and trampled their banners. Forget that wretched Rama. He has lost his glory and his throne. He wanders, abandoned by his friends, sleeping on the cold ground, or he is already dead of hardship. Even if he lives, he will never see you again. Could Hiranyakasipu win his glory back from Indra. Even in that soiled robe, with no jewels, you are dearer to me than all my wives. Come and be queen over them, and over me."

Sita thought of her husband, sighed, and answered him gently. "It is not right for you, King, to court a married woman who is faithful to her husband. Sin and wickedness bring no success. Shall I, born so high, shame my husband's house and my own family." Then she turned her back on him and went on. "Turn away from this wrong, Ravana. Protect other men's wives as you would your own. Don't do to others what would hurt you if it were done to you. This lawless desire will destroy you and your whole line, and because of your sin Lanka will fall. Wealth and power will never move me. I belong to my husband as sunlight belongs to the sun. Take me back to Rama and make him your friend. When he bends his bow, his arrows will fly like fiery snakes marked with his name, and your giants will fall around you."

Anger rose in Ravana's chest, and he spoke fiercely. "It is always the same. The more humbly a man pleads with a woman, the more she rebels. My love for you is the only thing holding back my anger, the way a charioteer reins in a swerving horse. That love is why I have put up with your scorn and your talk of that poor wandering hermit. Otherwise the words you have spoken would already have cost you your life. I will give you two more months to bend to my will. If, when that time is over, you still refuse my bed, my cooks will cut you to pieces and serve you to me for breakfast." The singing daughters of the sky looked on her sorrow with pity, and the shining children of the Gods comforted her with smiles and nods.

Seeing them, Sita's heart grew steady, and she answered him. "Is there no friend in this whole island who cares enough to warn you of the ruin your crime will bring. Who but you would court me, Rama's faithful wife, as if he were tempting Queen Shachi on her heavenly throne. Where the forest is thick a lion and a hare may lie together. My Rama is the lion, and you are the hare. Why has your eye not been struck blind for looking at me, and why does your tongue still move." Ravana hissed like an angry snake. "You will not listen. I will give you no more time. Today you die." He called the demon guards and told them, "Watch her closely, and tame her like a wild animal with threats and coaxing until her pride breaks." Then he strode away into his queens' palace.

The hideous guards closed in around Sita with burning eyes. "Do you not see your luck, to be chosen by Pulastya's son. Pulastya was born from Lord Brahma's mind, the fourth of the Lords of Life. From him came Vishravas, famed in every world, and from Vishravas came our mighty king Ravana. Don't scorn what we tell you." One fiery-eyed demon stood over the Maithil queen and said, "Be wise and be his. He struck down the lord of the skies and made the thirty-three Gods run. He turns away from young and lovely wives, and you are the one he wants." Another, named Vikata, said, "The Nagas and Gandharvas felt his blows, yet he stood by you and humbly asked. The sun grows cold at his look, the wind falls still, the rains obey him. Do what he wants, or you will surely die."

They kept at her. "Why turn down a life of silk and gold. Forget that wandering hermit or die for him." A tear came to Sita's eye, and she said, "I hate the shameful life you describe. Eat this body if you want. My soul will not accept the sin. Homeless as he is, he is my husband and my life, and I will hold to Ikshvaku's son until my last day." Then they glared at her, licking their lips, waving axes, spears and knives. "Obey us or die today. Give up Raghu's son and take Ravana, or we will tear you apart and feast on your heart." And they told one another, "Cut off her head and tell the king she is dead. Then, by his order, she will be our feast. Bring the wine that drives away sorrow, and let us go to the western gate and dance."
