Four stages of the path

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 4.69

Meaning · English

Beginning, the pot, then acquaintance, and last completion: in all the yogas there are these four stages.

The Pradipika here gives a short list and a promise. The list has four names. Arambha is the beginning, the start. Ghata is the pot, a jar, which the commentary's reading of the later verses takes as the stage where something begins to be held together. Paricaya is acquaintance, the way you come to know a person by meeting them again and again. Nishpatti is completion, the thing finished and ripe. The words for 'and', 'also' and 'thus' in the verse are only filler for the metre, the commentary says, so nothing hides in them. The promise is in the last phrase: in all the yogas there are these four stages. The commentary reads 'all the yogas' as all the ways of stilling the movements of the mind, shambhavi and the others, so the four are not tied to listening alone. They are the general shape of any such practice. The commentary adds that this line introduces the four stages of the inner sound, nada, which the next verses take up one at a time. Why teach it? A practitioner who has no map takes every strange early experience for the goal, or every dull stretch for failure. The text gives an order instead: start, hold, grow familiar, finish. What it asks is only that the practice be read in that order. It does not say how long any stage lasts.

A woman in her sixties has been learning the cello for a year and wonders why the tune still comes out thin. Her teacher tells her it is the ordinary course: first the notes are clumsy, then she can keep them steady, then the instrument feels familiar, and only later does playing feel finished. Skill learning in general is described in much this way. Early effort is awkward, steady repetition makes it reliable, and familiarity makes it easier. Psychology and education both recognise stages of this kind, and it is fair to say that expecting them can lower discouragement. That is as far as agreement goes. Nothing in modern research confirms that meditation or any hatha practice passes through exactly four fixed stages, or that the last one is a state of completion. The four names are the tradition's own account of inner experience, drawn from practitioners' reports and not measured. Held loosely, as a way of saying that progress in a quiet practice is slow and uneven, the idea is sensible. Held as a schedule, it goes beyond what anyone can check.
