The Mind Made One

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 4.77

Meaning · English

When the mind has become one, that state is called rajayoga. Such a yogi becomes the maker of creation and of its dissolution, and stands equal to the lord of yogis.

The verse gives a definition, a claim and a comparison, in that order. The definition comes first. Citta is the mind in its widest sense: thought, memory, feeling, the whole inner stream. Ekibhuta means 'become one', and the text does not ask for a quiet mind or a strong one. It asks for a mind that has stopped scattering and gathered into a single thing. The Pradipika says this state is what the name rajayoga stands for. Raja means 'king' or 'royal'. Yoga means union or joining. So the royal yoga is not a separate technique. It is the state itself, where the mind is one. The commentary reads it the same way and adds that one-pointedness of mind is rajayoga. It also says the verse speaks of the yogi who is given to following the inner sound, nada. That is the commentary's addition, but it fits the chapter, which has been leading the listener from sound to sound. The claim follows. Such a yogi becomes srishti-samhara-karta, 'the doer of creation and dissolution'. The commentary reads this as one who makes and who withdraws creation. This is the text's claim. It cannot be checked, and the text offers no demonstration. The comparison closes the verse. He becomes the equal of the yogishvara, the 'lord of yogis'. The commentary glosses this as equal to Ishvara, the Lord. The text does not explain how a person is equal to a god. It only says that this is how high it holds the single-minded mind. The Pradipika teaches this so that the long practice has a named goal. Asana, breath and listening all serve one end, and here the end gets its name. It asks nothing new of the practitioner. It says what the work is for.

A violin student is in the last bars of a piece she has played a hundred times. The room, the clock and the ache in her shoulder have dropped away, and there is only the next note. Psychology knows this kind of absorbed attention well, and people often describe it as time passing unnoticed. It is ordinary human experience, and it can be trained. Attention practices that gather the mind on one object, such as breath, sound or a single task, are widely taught, and many people find them steadying. That much sits comfortably beside the verse. The larger claims do not. Nothing in current medicine or psychology says a gathered mind lets anyone make or dissolve a world, or become equal to a god. Those are the tradition's claims, offered in its own language of Shiva and creation, and they stay beyond checking. There is also no modern equivalent for rajayoga as a final, named state. Psychology describes degrees of focus, not a destination. Anyone who finds prolonged or intense inner absorption unsettling, or who lives with anxiety, trauma or low mood, is better served by a qualified teacher or doctor than by a page.
