Hungry Seekers Walk Away
Ashtavakra Gita 15.3
Meaning · English
This knowing of the truth makes a person who was quick with words, clever, and driven by great effort into one who is mute, inert and idle. For that reason those who hunger for enjoyment have given it up.
Two ideas carry the teaching. Tattva-bodha is the awakening to what is real: tattva, the 'thatness' of a thing, and bodha, waking up. Bubhukshu is a person hungry to enjoy, from bhuj, to eat or enjoy. Ashtavakra says that when the truth is known, the busy person changes. He was fluent, sharp and always striving. Now he is mute, dull and idle. These are three descriptions, each seen from outside. The talk stops because there is nothing left to defend or win. The cleverness stops because there is nothing left to scheme for. The great effort stops because the self he was striving for is already whole, and the text teaches that the self is the witness and does nothing. To someone still hungry, such a person looks like a loss. That is why Ashtavakra says the hungry abandon this knowledge: they see only that it takes away their tools for getting. He is answering a question about why so few take it up. The reason is not that it is hidden. The reason is that appetite reads it as an ending. Janaka is asked to see the difference between being emptied and being finished with wanting.
A child runs through a fairground, shouting for one ride after another, full of plans. At night, fed and tired, the child sits quietly in a corner. The crowd still outside would call it dull. The fairground is the hunger for enjoyment. The quiet child is the knower, who has nothing left to run after.
1. Tonight, at one meal or conversation, notice the moment you reach for a clever remark or a win. 2. Let that one pass unspoken. Stay quiet for the length of three slow breaths. 3. Notice what you took to be a loss: the pause, the dullness, the feeling of doing nothing. 4. Before sleep, ask whether anything was actually missing, and write one line about it.
An uncle at a wedding dinner is deep in an argument about land and politics. He has the sharper points ready and can feel the next one forming. Then he notices he is not talking to be understood. He is talking to win, and his plate has gone cold. The teaching would change the moment in steps. He sees the urge to speak as an urge and not as an order. He lets the point go unsaid. The silence feels at first like being dull and idle, like losing, and the text says exactly that: hunger reads quiet as loss. He stays in it a little longer and finds the room has not collapsed. Ordinary experience agrees on this much: when we stop defending ourselves, we talk less. The teaching does not promise that the dispute is settled, that the hurt behind it is healed, or that his opinions were wrong. It does not replace a family conversation that still has to happen, or help from a counsellor where an old quarrel has turned painful.
