Not the Doer, Not the Body
Ashtavakra Gita 15.4
Meaning · English
You are not the body, and the body is not yours. You are not the one who enjoys, nor the one who acts. You are consciousness in form, always the witness, needing nothing. Move through the world at ease.
Ashtavakra takes away, one by one, the things King Janaka usually calls himself. Deha is the body. The verse says you are not it, and it is not yours: two denials, one for identity and one for ownership. Bhokta is the enjoyer, the one who receives pleasure and pain. Karta is the doer, the one who acts and claims the act. Both are set aside. What remains is cidrupa, form made of cit, which means awareness, the plain fact of knowing. Sakshi is the witness, the one who sees without taking part. Nirapeksha means without dependence or expectation: nothing outside is needed to complete it. Then comes the instruction, and it is a gentle one: carry on at ease. The reason it is taught now is the question that runs through these chapters: how is freedom won? Ashtavakra answers that nothing is won. A person who takes himself for the body, the doer and the enjoyer feels bound by results and wants. Seen as the witness, he was never inside that bond. What the verse asks of the listener is to recognise this, and then to live without strain, since the one who is free has no task left to carry out.
Picture someone sitting in a cinema watching a storm scene. The ship tosses, the actors shout, the room goes dark, and yet the viewer's seat is dry and still. The film changes every minute, but the one watching is not in it. The body, the deeds and the pleasures are the film. The witness is the seat that nothing touches.
1. Once today, while doing something ordinary like washing dishes or walking, notice that you are aware of your hands or feet moving. Stay with that noticing for one minute. 2. When a pleasant or unpleasant feeling arrives, say quietly to yourself, "this is being seen." Ask who is seeing it. 3. Tonight, before sleep, recall one thing you did today and one thing you enjoyed. See that both are over, and the one who saw them is still here.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his mother is in surgery. He has been rehearsing every outcome. His shoulders ache, his jaw is clenched, and he keeps checking the door. Ashtavakra's teaching would change the moment in steps. First, he would notice that he is watching this fear, not only inside it. Next, he would see that the body is tired and the mind is busy, and that both are objects of his seeing. Then he would stop holding himself responsible for the outcome in the operating room, which was never his act. The text says the one who knows is already free and needs nothing, so he could sit more quietly, breathe more slowly, and answer the nurse plainly when she comes. Ordinary experience confirms a small part of this: stepping back from a worry often loosens its grip a little. The teaching does not promise that the surgery will go well, that the fear will vanish, or that grief will be spared. It is not a replacement for the surgeons, nor for the people who can sit beside him.
