Likes Belong to the Mind
Ashtavakra Gita 15.5
Meaning · English
Liking and disliking are the mind's own nature. They are never yours. You are free of imagined divisions, you are knowing itself, you are without change. Go about your life at ease.
Ashtavakra names two things: raga and dvesha. Raga is liking, the pull toward something; the word comes from a root for dyeing, as cloth takes colour. Dvesha is dislike, the push away. He calls both manodharma, a property of the mind, the way heat belongs to fire. The mind likes and dislikes because that is what a mind does. Then he says the mind has never been yours. The one he is speaking to is not the mind. What is Janaka, then? Ashtavakra gives three names. Nirvikalpa means free of vikalpa, the mind's habit of cutting what is whole into this and that, wanted and unwanted. Bodhatma means the self that is knowing, awareness itself, not something that has a thought. Nirvikara means without change. Likes rise and fall, and this does not. The last word, cara, means to move about, to go on your way. Janaka has asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that nothing needs winning, because the one who knows was never coloured by the preferences passing through. The teaching asks Janaka to see liking and disliking as events seen, not as himself, and then to move through the world easily.
Rain and sunlight take turns crossing a window. The glass is wet, then dry, then bright, then dark, yet it is never made of rain or of sun. Likes and dislikes are the weather. The knowing in you is the glass they cross.
1. Today, when a small dislike shows up, such as a noisy neighbour, a cold tea or a rude message, stop for ten seconds and say silently, "dislike is here." 2. Do the same with a small liking, such as the smell of food or a favourite song: "liking is here." 3. Notice who is aware of it. Watch whether the feeling stays or goes while you watch. 4. Then carry on with what you were doing, at an easy pace.
A man sits at a family dinner across from a brother-in-law whose jokes he cannot stand. His jaw tightens. He is already planning a sharp reply, and the whole evening begins to turn on one irritation. The verse speaks to that moment. First, the dislike is noticed as something that has arrived, the way a smell arrives. Then it is seen to have come and to be rising, with no need for him to be its owner. From there he can still pass the rice, answer politely, and leave the sharp reply unsaid, because the dislike is no longer steering. Ordinary experience agrees that irritation grows louder when we are tired or hungry, which is to say it moves with the state of the body and mind and not with the facts. The verse does not promise that the brother-in-law becomes pleasant, or that the dislike never returns. It does not ask him to stay near someone who is truly harmful, and it does not remove grief or pain. It says only that the one who sees the dislike is not the dislike.
