Meaning · English
Knowing the self in all beings, and all beings in the self, be free of ego and free of "mine", and be happy.
Ashtavakra gives Janaka two lines of sight in one breath. The self is in all beings, and all beings are in the self. Atman, the self, is the knowing presence awake in you and, he says, in everyone. It is not one person's possession. Seen this way, no creature stands outside it and none is a stranger. Then two words name what falls away. Ahamkara is the "I-maker", the habit of drawing a line round one body and one history and calling that line me. Nirahamkara is to be without it. Mama is "mine"; nirmama is to be without the clutching that says this person, this place, this grievance belongs to me. The last word, sukhi, means ease, a settled happiness. Ashtavakra does not ask Janaka to produce it. Having fully understood, he says, be at ease. Why teach this here? Just before, he has told Janaka he is not the body but the witness, and that liking and disliking belong to the mind. Janaka asked how freedom is won. The answer is by knowing, not by doing. If the self is one and unbroken, nothing is left to defend and nothing to grab. Ego and "mine" were the only walls between Janaka and the ease he already has. What is asked of him is to see this clearly and let the claiming drop.
Clay pots stand in a courtyard, and the space inside each pot is the same space that fills the courtyard. Break the walls and nothing is let in or out. The pots are beings, the space is the self: it is in each of them, and each sits in it, so the lines between them belong only to the clay.
1. Today, in a queue or on a bus, choose one stranger and watch them for a minute. 2. Tell yourself quietly: the same awareness looks out of those eyes as out of mine. 3. When "my seat" or "my turn" comes up, name it as "mine" and let one breath pass before you react. 4. At night, note once where the claiming softened, even slightly.
Two neighbours stand at a boundary wall on a Sunday morning, one holding a measuring tape, both already angry about a hand's width of ground. The teaching, as Ashtavakra gives it, would work on that moment in steps. First, the "my" in "my wall" is seen as a claim laid over the plain fact of a wall. Second, the man across it is seen as the same awareness looking out through another face, so he stops being an opponent first and a person second. Third, with nothing of the self at stake, the voice can come down and the dispute can be settled on its merits, a fair line or a shared cost. Ordinary experience confirms that a tight "mine" narrows attention and sets the jaw. The teaching does not promise that the neighbour will agree, that the line will fall your way, or that the sting of being wronged will vanish. Nor does it replace a surveyor or a lawyer where the law has to decide.
