Waves on the Sea

Ashtavakra Gita 15.7

Meaning · English

This universe flashes forth in you as waves rise on the sea. That is the reality itself, without doubt. Embodiment of consciousness, be free of fever.

Ashtavakra gives Janaka a comparison and a command. Three words carry it. Sphurati means to flash or throb forth: the world does not sit apart from you, it keeps appearing. Cinmurti is consciousness (cit) as a form (murti), the knowing that has taken the shape of who you are. Vijvara means without fever, the heat of restless wanting and dread. A wave is only the sea raised for a moment, and when it falls nothing is lost. Ashtavakra says the whole universe stands to the knower as the wave stands to the sea. It rises in awareness, is made of nothing else, and returns to it. He adds that there is no doubt in this. It is the reality, as his teaching puts it, not a mood or a guess. The reason it is taught here is Janaka's trouble: he asked how freedom is won, and Ashtavakra answers that nothing outside needs to be won. What troubles a person is the sense that the world is a separate thing pressing in. Seen as waves, it loses its grip. So the command is to put down the fever. It is not an order to leave the world, only to stop burning over it.

A film of a storm plays on a white cloth screen. Ships break, lightning flares, and the screen stays dry and unmarked. Everything that appears happens on it and is lit by it. The universe is the storm, and the knowing you are is the screen.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the day's worries in mind. Name the loudest one in a single sentence. 2. Notice that you are aware of it. The worry comes and goes, and the noticing stays the same. 3. When worry heats up tomorrow, silently say "this is a wave" once, then carry on with the task in front of you. 4. At bedtime, recall one thing from the day that felt enormous and has already passed.

A father is awake the night before his daughter's wedding. He counts the costs, the guests arriving by train, the caterer who has not confirmed, and every item feels like a fact about the whole world. Ashtavakra's words would change the night in steps. First, the father sees that each worry is a happening in his awareness, and that the awareness is steady while the worries rise and fall. Second, the grip loosens a little, since the heat came from taking each wave for the whole sea. Third, he still phones the caterer in the morning, because the teaching asks for freedom from fever, not for neglect of work. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a worry looks smaller after a night's rest and a name. The teaching does not promise that the caterer will arrive, that money will be enough, or that sorrow will not come. It does not replace a doctor if the sleeplessness or racing heart continues for days.
