Faith, Not Confusion
Ashtavakra Gita 15.8
Meaning · English
Have faith, dear child, have faith. Do not be bewildered about this. You are knowing itself by nature, the glorious self, and you stand beyond nature.
Three words carry the teaching. Shraddha is faith, from placing the heart: trust given to a word before it is proved. Moha is bewilderment, a fog in which one mistakes what one is. Prakriti is nature, everything made of changing qualities: body, thoughts, moods, the whole world of events. Para means beyond. Ashtavakra calls Janaka dear child, and the first line asks twice for trust. He has just told the king that the body comes and goes, and that the world rises in him. A listener may hear this and begin to doubt, or feel bewildered. So the teacher steadies him. The second line says do not be confused here, because this is the one place where confusion does harm. Then he names what Janaka is. He is knowing by nature, not someone who sometimes knows. He is the glorious self, whole and needing nothing added. And he is beyond nature, so nothing that changes in nature changes him. The reason for the teaching is that Janaka asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answers that it is not won, only recognised, and recognising begins with trusting the one who points.
A man turns the house upside down for his glasses while they sit on his forehead. His daughter says, they are on your head. He feels the doubt, since he has looked everywhere, yet he has to trust her and touch them. The self is the glasses already there: no search finds it, because the searcher is it.
1. Tonight, pick one worry that has been circling, and say to yourself: this is a thought, and I am the one aware of it. 2. Sit quietly for two minutes and notice that the awareness watching the thought has no size and no worry in it. 3. When doubt comes, do not argue. Let the doubt pass in front of you as you would watch a car pass. 4. Repeat once tomorrow morning, before checking your phone.
A man sits on a night train home. That afternoon he was laid off, and now he has to tell his family. His mind runs a loop: I am finished, I am nothing without that job. Ashtavakra's word to Janaka asks for trust before proof, and it shifts the moment in steps. First the loop is seen as a loop, a fog the text calls bewilderment. Then comes a question: who is it that notices the fear? That one is not laid off, and was there before the job and the title. The text teaches that this knower is the self, beyond all that changes. From there he can breathe, rehearse the plain words he will say at the door, and let the night be a night. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: frightening thoughts feel like facts when we are tired and alone. The teaching does not pay the rent, remove the fear, or take the place of real help from people and plans.
