Meaning · English
The body, wrapped round by the qualities of nature, stays, comes and goes. The self neither goes nor comes. Why do you grieve over it? Let the body last until the end of the age, let it go this very day, or let it go again some other time. Where is any gain, where any loss, for you, whose form is consciousness alone?
Three words carry it. Guna means a strand or quality of nature, from a root for a thread: the body is bound up in these threads, like a bundle tied with cord. Deha is the body. Cinmatra is cit, awareness, plus matra, only: consciousness and nothing added. Ashtavakra first states a plain fact of the body. It stays for a while, arrives, departs, all under the pull of nature's qualities. Then he turns to the self. It does not go and it does not come, because it was never in a place to leave or reach. So he asks Janaka why he mourns it. Nothing has happened to the one who knows. The second half pushes further. If the body lasts to the end of the age, or falls tonight, the answer is the same. Janaka is told his true form is consciousness only, and a thing made only of awareness has no ledger. Gain and loss belong to the body and to what it collects. The question behind the teaching is Janaka's wish for freedom. Ashtavakra's answer is that nothing needs to be won or protected. The listener is asked to look at who is grieving, and to see that the one who watches the body come and go stays as the watcher.
A mirror hangs on a wall. Faces come before it, young and old, smiling and tired, and each one leaves. The mirror is no richer when a face arrives and no poorer when it goes. The body is the passing face; the self is the glass that holds each one and keeps none.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name three things your body did today: hunger, tiredness, an ache, a yawn. 2. After each, ask quietly, "Who noticed this?" 3. Stay a moment with the noticing itself, and see that it was not hungry or tired. 4. This week, when a small bodily worry rises, repeat steps 2 and 3 once before reacting. Still see a doctor when you need one.
A grandfather sits on a park bench watching his grandchildren run. He looks down at his hands and sees them shake a little, as his own father's did. His knees ache when he stands. For a moment the thought comes: I am going. The teaching speaks to that moment in steps. First it lets him say plainly that the body stays, changes and goes, as bodies do. Then it asks what has been watching the children, and the hands, all this time. Ordinary experience agrees that the sense of being the one who notices feels the same at seven and at seventy, though everything else about him has altered. The text teaches that this knower is what he is, and that it neither arrives nor leaves. From there the grief for the body can sit beside him without being the whole of him. It does not promise that the shaking will stop, that his sadness will vanish, or that he should skip the check-up. A tremor or a new pain still belongs with a doctor. The verse speaks to who he takes himself to be, not to the care the body needs.
