The self is not born, for scripture does not teach its birth, and the same texts declare it everlasting. For this very reason it is a knower.
The question is whether the individual self, the jiva, comes into being the way space or fire does, or is unborn like Brahman, the one reality behind the world. Badarayana says it is not born, and gives two reasons. First, scripture never teaches a birth for it; passages that seem to do so speak loosely. Second, the same scriptures call it eternal, and what is eternal has no beginning. Shankara's commentary sets out the opposing view first: sparks flying from a fire, and the promise that knowing one thing makes all things known, seem to make the self a product of Brahman. The sutra answers that such texts do not settle it. Then comes the second clause: for this very reason the self is a knower, jna. Knowing is not something it picks up from body or mind; it is what the self is. Shankara reads this as the self being consciousness itself. Ramanuja too holds it eternal and a knower, but a distinct one with knowledge as its quality.
A lit lamp does not borrow its light from the room; the room is bright because the lamp is in it. Carry it into a dark cellar and nothing is added to it. The self is like that: knowing is not supplied by the body or senses it passes through. It is the self's own light, which those instruments only direct.
Whether consciousness is a product or a basic feature of reality is still open. Physicalism holds that minds arise from brains, and neuroscience shows how tightly awareness depends on brain states: anaesthesia, injury and deep sleep change or remove it. That sits uneasily with an unborn self. Against this, the hard problem of consciousness asks why any physical process should be accompanied by experience at all, and idealists and panpsychists treat consciousness as fundamental rather than produced. Shankara's claim goes further than either: a self that is eternal and knowing by nature. No evidence settles that, and science has no test for it. What the sutra shares with the modern debate is the suspicion that knowing is not simply a tool the self receives from outside.
