The Means and the Crown
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 4.103
Meaning · English
So the following of the inner sound, and every method of hatha and of laya, is for the success of raja yoga. A person who has climbed fully into raja yoga becomes a cheater of time.
The word that opens the line closes the teaching of the inner sound. Nada is sound, and anusandhana is the steady joining of attention to it. The Pradipika says this listening is one of the means, and that it stands in the same row as all the methods of hatha and of laya. Hatha is the discipline of posture, breath and seals. Laya is dissolving, the mind sinking into what it listens to. Both are named here as tools. What they serve is raja yoga, the royal yoga, the settled mastery of the mind. Siddhi, the word for what they serve, means success or accomplishment. The text calls it the reason for all the rest. That is why the line is placed here. After many verses on the practice of listening, the Pradipika reminds the reader that no method is the goal. The listening is a ladder, and raja yoga is where it leads. The second half gives the result. One who has mounted raja yoga, which is what the word for being fully established means, becomes a kalavancaka, a cheater of time. Kala is time, and in the manuals it also means death. This is the text's claim. It cannot be checked, and the text offers no proof. For the practitioner, the verse asks for a sense of proportion. Each practice is held as a means, and the end is the steadiness of raja yoga.
A man sits awake through a night train, and somewhere past midnight he notices he is following the beat of the wheels without trying. His thoughts have slowed. Many people know this small experience. Resting attention on one steady, simple sound is a familiar kind of attention training, and mainstream psychology accepts that practising it can calm a busy mind and help people rest. That much agrees with the Pradipika's use of listening as a way to gather the mind. The text's larger picture does not have a modern counterpart. Raja yoga as a final state, and the dissolving of the mind in what it hears, are the tradition's account of an inner experience. Medicine and psychology have no test for it. The claim of cheating time, or death, has no evidence behind it. People who follow this practice still age and die like everyone else. Anyone who hears a ringing or humming in the ears that does not fade should have it checked by a doctor. It should not be taken as the inner sound.
