Samadhi and the Guru

Gheranda Samhita 7.1

Meaning · English

Gheranda said: samadhi is the highest yoga, and it is won through great good fortune. It is reached by the grace and favour of the guru, and through devotion to the guru.

Gheranda is speaking to his student Chanda, and this opens the seventh and last teaching of the book. Take the key words one at a time. Samadhi comes from roots meaning to put together or to hold in one place. The mind is gathered and no longer scattered. The text calls it the highest yoga, the point toward which the earlier limbs of the book, the cleansings, postures, seals and breath, have been leading. Then comes the claim that it is gained through great good fortune. The word means a great deal of fortune. The text does not say it is bought by effort alone. It treats the state as something that arrives for a few, when conditions have ripened. What those conditions are, Gheranda does not list here. Next he names the way it is reached: the guru's kindness and favour, and the student's devotion to the guru. Guru means teacher, the person who hands the practice down by word and example. Two things are paired. One is the teacher's grace, which the student cannot command. The other is devotion, which the student can offer. Why does the text teach this first, before any method? Because it places the end of the path in a relationship rather than a technique. It asks of a practitioner a settled trust in a teacher. It gives no steps, counts or postures here. Whether samadhi can be reached at all is the text's claim, and this verse offers no way to check it.

A woman in her sixties sits on the floor across from her singing teacher, repeating one phrase of a raga until the teacher nods. She has noticed that nothing in the lesson could have come from a book. That is the part of this verse most easily recognised today. Skills that live in the body and the attention, such as music, craft and meditation, are ordinarily passed on person to person, and a good teacher corrects what the learner cannot see. Trust in a teacher also keeps a learner at the work through dull and discouraging stretches, which is well understood. Samadhi itself is another matter. Modern medicine and psychology have no agreed measure for it, and no established account of what it is. Meditation in general is studied for attention, stress and mood, but that is far from the state Gheranda means. His claim that it comes through grace and good fortune has no modern equivalent either. It cannot be tested, so it stays the tradition's teaching. A caution belongs here too. Devotion to a teacher has helped many students, but it has also been abused. Today's sensible advice is to trust a teacher who earns it and to leave one who causes harm.
