Four Gestures, Four Fruits
Gheranda Samhita 7.5
Meaning · English
Through shambhavi, khechari, bhramari and yoni mudra come four kinds of attainment: meditation, the inner sound, the joy of its taste, and success in dissolving the mind. Samadhi is fourfold in this way.
The line is a list, set out in two rows. The first row names four mudras. A mudra is a seal or gesture, a held posture of eyes, tongue, breath or hand that closes one door so the attention turns inward. Shambhavi is Shiva's gesture, tied to the gaze. Khechari means moving in the sky or open space, and is the tongue-based mudra. Bhramari is the bee, named for the humming breath. Yoni mudra is the gesture of the source, in which the senses are shut off. The text gives no method for any of them here. The second row names four results. Dhyana is meditation, a steady holding of the mind on one object. Nada is the inner sound, the subtle note the hatha texts ask the practitioner to listen for. Rasananda joins rasa, taste or essence, with ananda, joy: the savour of that inner experience. Laya-siddhi is accomplishment in laya, the dissolving of the mind's movement into stillness. The verse does not say which mudra gives which result. Reading the two rows in order suggests a pairing, but that is an inference from the order. The text states only that the whole is fourfold. Its reason for listing them is that one goal can be approached by more than one road. A practitioner is not asked to do all four.
A woman sits on the back step after the last guest has gone, and the house is finally quiet. She notices her own pulse, a faint hum in her ears, and a loosening in her thoughts. Almost anyone has met this: when outside noise drops, small internal sounds come forward. That much is ordinary experience, and quiet attention and slow humming breaths are widely taught for calming a busy mind. Beyond that, today's understanding is cautious. Absorbed meditation is studied as a state of attention and relaxation, and people do report deep calm and contentment from it. Whether this matches what the text calls rasananda or laya is not something anyone can measure. The mudras, the inner sound as a stage on a path, and dissolution of the mind are the tradition's account, not physiology. A persistent ringing in the ears is a matter for a doctor, not a practice. Tongue and sense-closing mudras are learnt with a teacher, not from a page.
