Mind Like the Wind

Bhagavad Gita 6.34

Meaning · English

The mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, strong and obstinate. Holding it back, I think, is as hard as holding the wind.

Arjuna is the one speaking, and this is his view in that moment, not Krishna's teaching. He has just heard that the best yogi sees every being's joy and sorrow as his own. Now he says why he doubts he can reach it. He uses four words for the mind. Chanchala means restless, always moving. Pramathi comes from a root meaning to churn or shake, so the mind agitates a person like a rough sea. Balavat is strong, and dridha is firm or obstinate, a mind that does not give way to argument. Then comes nigraha, control, literally a holding down or holding back. Arjuna thinks it as hard as nigraha of the wind, which slips through any grip. His reason is plain experience. He has tried to hold his own mind and it will not stay. He is not refusing the path, only saying how hard it looks from where he stands. Shankara reads the mind's churning as shaking up the body and senses, and its firmness as something that resists being undone. Ramanuja takes it as an honest report of difficulty that Krishna goes on to answer with practice. Madhva likewise sees Arjuna raising the difficulty so the means can be taught.

A small child led through a market by the hand. Every stall pulls her sideways: a bright toy, a sweet smell, a loud call. She tugs, stops, darts, and the grip tires. The child is the mind, the stalls are whatever catches it, and the tired grip is Arjuna's sense that force alone will not do.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes with a cup of tea and nothing else in your hands. No phone, no page. 2. Each time your mind leaves the cup for a worry or a plan, quietly count it. Do not scold it. 3. When the two minutes end, say aloud the number you counted. That is simply how restless your mind is today, a plain fact to know. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour and compare.

A man lies awake at two in the morning. He decided an hour ago to sleep, but his mind keeps replaying a remark from dinner, then tomorrow's meeting, then a bill. He grows angry at himself for failing to stop it. Arjuna's words change one step here. He does not call the wandering a flaw of character. He names it as the mind's nature, strong and hard to hold, as the wind is. So the man can see the replaying as what minds do rather than proof that he is weak, and the anger at himself loses some fuel. Next he can notice where the mind has gone, and gently bring it back to the breath or the dark room, again and again, without a fight. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness makes the mind wander more. The verse does not promise sleep, and it does not quiet the worry itself. Sleeplessness that goes on for weeks, or a mind racing in a way that frightens him, is a matter for a doctor.
